Gonna build a 6.5, but which one?

6.5 PRC Hornady brass not good ?
They weigh pretty close .

I can't say that, I only have 1 firing through mine.

That was me merely saying if you want premium brass it's more accessible right now for the 6.5-284 than it is for the PRC

I also only once fired . Going this Fri. To the desert to try some 6.5 PRC loads and for some other rifles. I have some Hornady brass for some 6.5 Creeds I've fired 3 times. Still good.

...and the accuracy and consistency is H A R D to beat...

Dam I hope my son 6.5 saum shoots half that good I was going to have him just share his sisters 7/08AI but what fun is that. Stumbled on a 6.5 saum barreled action its a Howa and barrel is a 24' shine that was fluted. Timney trigger and its at Kampfeld to paint the mcmillian stock and bedding. Hoping she shoots. I wanted something he can pretty much do it all with and not out grow.

I am more for a bit different cartridges.
So I vote for a 6 5SLR for a rifle that will see a lot of rounds. Think .260Rem w. 6.5x47L neck & shoulders. Uses .243 Win or .260 Rem brass. One pass through the FL die gets you a 95% case. I use Rem .243 brass for a no neck turn solution. If you are thinking 26" barrel, expect 2900+fps from a 140 gr bullet. I ran a 28" and got 2950fps before, and my new one with 22" is getting 2840 with a 140gr. Not broken in yet.
My daughter has been shooting it since she was 11. Killed a big mule deer buck at 637 with it and dumped him on the spot.

6CM vs 6.5SLR

If you are going to hunt more than shoot steel, I vote 6.5SS. Wicked hunting round. I have one now, and am building a second one. I can get 3160fps from a 150 SMK, and 3200 from a 140 HVLD.

6.5SAUM w. 140 vs 6.5SS w. 150

Considering 6.5 Creed, 6.5 PRC, 6.5 SAUM, 6.5 GAP and possibly .260 Rem Ack Imp.

Basically a hunting rifle with some steel shooting for fun out to 1000 yards or more. Deer sized game or less.

Would like for my daughter to be able to use it for deer. She is already shooting .243 Win comfortably.

Reloading is no issue. Would certainly prefer readily available components and dies. Prefer Redding Bushing dies. Would like to build on a short action or medium action with a 26" proof carbon barrel with brake.

What do you guys think?

I think I got exactly what you described. Will be happy to sell it. Brass, and competition Redding dies to you.

You have plenty of good responses but here's my personal 6.5 experience:
I have a lightweight 6.5 saum and its been unbelievable with 147's.

I've taken my last three bulls with it (one over a half mile away), and my wife shoots it exclusively, without a brake.

That being said I would go with a 6.5 PRC, it has a little less capacity than the SAUM, and will still run a 147 @ 3050 with H1000.

ADG brass and readily available dies are hard to beat, the PRC will be just fine in a short action, I run my SAUM at 2.97".

Any opinions on twist for these 6.5's? Lots of factory barrels are 1-8?

Can you run 150's in standard short action bottom metal for remington clones with a SAAMI spec chamber? That's a broad question, so let's narrow that down to 6.5 PRC, 6.5 SAUM, 6.5 SS. Still not ruling out the Creed, but like the idea of running 140-147's to 3,000fps...

At least 1:8 or 7-7.5 for some of the highest b c new bullets like 150 sierra
