Glad I Looked Through a Leupold MK5 Today!

Oh my, I know how to establish proper eye relief. The sight picture was clean edge to edge from shadow. I'm talking thick black internal scope tube look, hence the toilet paper roll.
Depending where your eye focus ends up when adjusting for you I can see that you'd see more black.

That is what I believe happened is that eye relief was fine or setup at low power which leads to issues at the upper magnification limit.
Maybe just needs to set the scope correctly

Well anyway. I will need to look through some more MK 5 HDs and see if this is replicated. Till then I'll roll with a Burris XTR III. I know for certain that is a fantastic scope.
I had a XTR II and XTR III and sold both of them. They had a difficult time in very bright sunlight with aberration on targets getting purple edging around them. It got so bad when shooting I just couldn't justify the price/performance, sent them down the road. So much of the optical performance on scopes is based on judgement. What looks good to one guy doesn't look good to another. I wear glasses which doesn't help either, some of the anti reflective coatings and polarized effects on my glasses can have a effect on scope/bino glass also. So far my Mark5 and my Bushnell Elite Tacticals work best for me. Glass coming from LOW in Japan seems to work best for me.

We're you using scope covers on your mk5? I have a mk5 5-25 and had factory lens caps installed and just replaced them with the Tenibrex covers and now I have a very large black ring around my objective as you are describing. Going back to the factory included caps.

I have the PR2 mk5 5-25. And a nx8 2.5-20 and also 4-32. Field of view is for sure smaller on the MK5. Even in the specs it's spec'd smaller than NF. I can tell and it's obvious. Been running the nx8's for about a year and they are great with excellent glass and field of view. The MK5 does have better glass to me It's easy to get the parallax out /focus , reticle is super sharp at all powers , and I've ran the turrets through the ringer and it's dead on for tracking and comes back to zero. It's a solid scope IMO. Dislike on the MK5 would be slightly smaller field of view Dislikes on nx8's would be more finicky parallax/focus..

5-25 model and it was disappointing. Toilet paper tube field of view, horrible eye box, nothing to get impressed about. My VX5 HD 3-15x44 knocks the pants off that MK5.

Two 5-30x range scopes that have impressed me are the Vortex Razor Gen II and Burris XTR III. I even like the Bushnell Elite Tactical DMR II 3-21X50.

Why doesn't anybody talk about the Toilet Paper Tube aspect of the MK5?
My experience does not align with yours. Don't have the 5-25 but, have the 5HD 7-35 on a Barrett MRAD MK22 and three other MRADs. Very pleased....clarity, resolution, tracking (verified dead nuts on and repeatable)......impeccable to my old eyes. Selected by SOCCOM for their MK22s after evaluating everything available regardless of brand, country of origin. Best of the best optic value available for my money. Got three of them for under $2100 each plus a free Kestrel 4DOF. There are other great offerings out there, but in my world none provide the performance value.......and, I'm more into performance than value.

Where did you purchase your scope? Pursue the other posts suggesting possibility of a fake item. Work with Leupold Customer Service to confirm authenticity and your dissatisfaction issue.

Leupolds are serial numbered. Call them with the number on your "bad" scope and hold your breath. I speak
from experience....
FYI, from Leupold website:

HOW TO CHECK FOR AUTHENTICITY

All Leupold riflescopes are given an individual serial number. Counterfeit scopes often use a fake serial number, all identical serial numbers, or incorrect numbering convention. If you find a scope that is suspect, simply write down the serial number and call 1-800-LEUPOLD to ask if the scope is authentic. In most cases, we can confirm a scope's authenticity by its serial number.

Leupold riflescopes are all designed, machined, and assembled in our Beaverton Oregon manufacturing facility. We do not have any other riflescope manufacturing facilities or offices anywhere in the world. So if you come across a Leupold riflescope being shipped into the United States from China, it is a very likely a counterfeit.

We encourage all consumers to protect intellectual property and combat counterfeits by reporting suspected counterfeits to www.iprcenter.gov/referral or by sending us detailed information using the Ask a Leupold Expert form and selecting "Counterfeit Issue" for the "How can we help you?" question.

That's good info. It wasn't my scope. Thank God!
