hey all, just thought I'd share an amusing experience.
I'm drawn for antlerless elk, was out walking some bush lines in an area they've been frequenting all summer. Saw tons of tracks and bedding sites, no elk so far.
Walking through some tall thistles and long grass to see about the off chance something was still bedded down I could rustle up.
Heard crashing and crunching frozen leaves, thought "here we go!". Brought the rifle to shoulder, ready. Of course, it was a whitetail doe, not an elk. Disappointing as this was, I thought I'd see what might happen here. I made my best approximation of that grunt/bark deer make (my technique is to make the sound inhaling, not exhaling, and it worked). She spun a literal 180 degrees and ran flat out right up to me! and I was not obscured, standing in the middle of the field.
Forget archery distance, by the time she stopped coming closer a caveman with a big rock to throw could have taken her. 30 feet tops.
She just stood there looking at me. I talked in normal volume speaking voice to the deer. "Too bad I'm not here for you hey?" Blank stare. "You really have no idea what's going on here do you?" Blank Stare. "Mind if I take a picture of you?" No response of course. I put the gun down and pulled out my phone to snap a picture. The second I pulled the phone out she bolted and ran away as if she had seen a gun!!! .
