I need to get a 300 WSM reamer for a build that I want to shoot 215 grain Berger VLDs. What freebore length is needed?

I have a call in to Dave at PT&G but he has not returned it yet so I thought I would ask those in the know.

Thanks
wade

My reamer has .235 freebore and shoots everything from the 200 hybrids up too the 230 hybrids, also eats the 208 amax and the 210 hunting VLD's as well.

Another approach would be to seat a bullet to fit and feed from your magazine then send a dummy round to Dave with instructions for the bullet to kiss the lands or with a jump that you feel is appropriate.

The 215 is a hybrid not a VLD. For what it is worth, all the hybrids I have loaded to date have not shown a preference for a particular distance from the lands, they are very forgiving. From a jump of .165" to "into" the lands they shoot great. (6mm,7mm,308 and 338s)

I spoke with Dave Kiff a few weeks ago about the exact same thing and he advised a .235"fb for the 215, approx. .255"fb for 215 and 230's and a .280"fb for 230's only.

I ran into this info while searching for something else ... don't want to assume anything and just posting this as FYI only and for what is worth ...

Important points to consider before free boring:
To gain the full potential of adding more free bore to your rifle there are several issues that you must consider before the process.
1. You must handload your own ammunition.
2. Do you want to limit bullet weights in this rifle for optimum accuracy.
3. Will the magazine box in this rifle have to be altered to handle the longer ammo.
4. Will the increase in velocity that you gain in this process substantiate all the above.

Cheers!

Case capacity is be a big factor so go from there. Bearing surface at the shoulder is where you want to be.
