finally got a little time to write this up. my good friend Tim drew a speed goat tag for the upper san luis valley , right here in our backyard. i have been keeping an eye out for a big one. biggest one we could find was hunkered down on private land not more than 200 yds from the main highway....stayed there all opening weekend.
tim came over the previous day and shot my new gun (6X284) and liked the idea of using it to harvest his goat. we had several close calls but took no shots for 3 days of hard hunting. he had one more morning available the next to last day of the season. my son had been out spotting for elk and saw a nice goat. we managed to get to within about 300 yds and set up for the shot only to have a mulie buck spook the goats into a run. they then spotted us as we manneuvered for another chance. we were in sparce oak brush with many openings....they decided to get the heck outta there and ran down hill , back out on the flats. they stopped when they felt they had enough distance between us.....bad idea...i ranged them with my leica (it worked great on this hunt!) @ 660 yds...slightly downhill, no wind. Tim was down on the gun with the bipods down...i dialed 43 clicks of elevation and told him to send it as soon as the buck cleared....BANG/FLOP!!!!! first shot this rifle has fired at game. maybe i need to change the name of my baby....from dogdinger to goat getter! i hope the pics come thru....the bullet used was a 107 gr SMK
