favorite powder for 45-70 modern loads?

In both my 45-70 and 45-120, I found Win 748 to be the best powder and, in my 30-30 too.
I tried 4198 (H4198 only), H4895 and RE15, none of them were as good as 748.
I always wanted to try RE12 but never got the chance before it was dropped from production.

Cheers.

IMR 4198 is one of the more versatile powders that works well with various bullet weights. The latest pricing and availability pushed me toward finding one or more substitutes. I landed on N120 (300-350 gr) and N130 (350-420 gr) at significant discounts. Have only tried the N120 thus far with a 300 gr bullet. Accuracy is on par with IMR and it doesn't heat up the barrel as much. Happy camper.

I really wanted to try RL7 but prices on Alliant powders are completely jacked. 5 lbs of RL7 for same price as 8 lbs of N130? Easy decision.
Yep that's a big difference in price. Have used N133 for 45-70 but never tried N130, yet. At around 50 grains per shot that's about 140 cartridges, loaded per pound of powder. At $65 bucks a pound, that works out to about a dime more per shot, than the $40 bucks a pound stuff. The accuracy of Reloader 7, seems worth that bit more money but, quite a few powders do well in a 45-70 case.

I wanna know what the deal is with H4198…I think it's the only powder I haven't seen available anywhere for nearly 4 years???

I have a great load using Alliant 10x and 300 grain bullets. I drove them clear up to 2400fps without pressure signs in my 18.5" guide gun. I got scared of the velocity and the recoil so I backed it down to 2325 and left it be. As stated I'm looking elsewhere with Alliant's new prices
