So I bought a new Broughton 5C in .284 for my carry gun - 7mm08. Bought it with a fast twist so I could shoot either the 175gr SMK or the 162 A-Max. My question is this, will this barrel shoot the lighter 140gr bullets equally well? Or am I limited to the heavy weights?

it should shootthe light bullets fine.
I had a 1-8 for a 243 Ai built to shoot 105 and 107 gr bullets yet it shot 55gr Ballistic tips very well but coulden't be pushed to hard or they would blowup

usually lighter works unless you are shooting light jacketed bullets and then they may tear apart. The stability issue is mostly on the heavy end.

Try mono metal bullets. They will have the length of the heavy bullets, so they need the fast twist, but will give you the speed of the light bullets w/o coming apart.
