Sorry for the bombardment of posts, but I know some on here will be new to the idea of HTL and long range turkey hunting. I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of the obstacles. If you are new to this it sounds like something you want to try, now is the time to get your shotgun ready for a fall turkey hunt.
A quality rangefinder is a necessity to estimate ranges. Ideally, you will range the area before the bird arrives, but this can be difficult in areas like fields where landmarks are hard to come by.
If you are a landowner or you lease a property, you can use a tactic that bowhunters use for deer. Once you find the area you want to hunt during your fall preseason scouting, it can be helpful to leave distance markers in those areas. For example, if you are hunting at a common field crossing, this can be as simple as dropping a few sticks of firewood in the right places or jamming some sticks in the ground a predetermined distances. The turkeys won't know th difference.
