Dont' often see the .270 mentioned

+1 for the 270! I have a Mod 70 Classic featherweight. Shoots under 3/4 MOA all day long if I don't warm up the barrel. It's a great little rifle for taking on long hikes. I usually shoot the 140gr Hornady BTSP and I have a confirmed white tail kill at 620yards in SD wind and numerous dead prairie dogs to its credit. I have a lot of confidence in it and I have no doubt that it will take an elk if I do my part.

I also have a .308, but that's a special purpose rifle I usually only use for work. I have however taken a 6x5 white tail with it at 225yds.

I'm the kind of guy who puts more emphasis on ability than on the latest greatest gadget though. I see too many guys who want to show off what they bought rather than what they've done.

My Dad always said, "If you ever wonder if a guy is a half wit, count his fingers. Then if you're still not sure, start up a conversation about hunting with him."
I think the old man was right!

Anyone who thinks .270 is obsolete obviously spends more time reading gun magazines than he does hunting.

i have to vote with ryan... dont think the 280 or the 06 will ever kill the 270
i bet in another 85 yrs they will still be shooting em... some calibers are just to good to die. gun)

here is what I think it is in a nut shell just with hunting not long distance shooting.
In all the advertizing and mags all they promote is that to deer hunt you just have to have this new rifle to kill a deer.
It is a 5.3 pound rifle in 416 rigby 400 grain bullet with the all so accurate 18 inch barrel. Any thing else just don't get it any more.
I just bought a new Marlin XL7 270 winchester and I love it and for only $282.00 total with tax and out the door. plus all the savage barrels will fit it too.

AFTER A LITTLE RESEARCH HERE IS WHAT I FOUND
ALL OF THESE ARE FOR 500 YARDS ZERO
HIGH POINT = TOP OF ARCH OF BALLISTICS DOWN RANGE

180 GRAIN 3260 FPS .372 BC
ZERO 500 YARDS

KILL ANIMAL AT 500YDS WEIGHING 430 POUNDS

300 WIN MAG
180 GR 3230 FPS .407 BC
ZERO 500 YARDS
HIGH POINT AT 275 YARDS 15.2 INCHES
KILL ANIMAL AT 500YDS WEIGHING 473 POUNDS

7MAG
140 GR 3340FPS .416BC
ZERO 500 YARDS
PATH HIGHT 13.9 AT 275 YDS
KILL ANIMAL AT 500YDS WEIGHING 331 POUNDS

264 WIN MAG
140 grain 3353 fps .535 BC 30" barrel
ZERO 500 YARDS
MAX HIGH 12.4 INCHES AT 250 YARDS
KILL ANIMAL AT 500YDS WEIGHING 444 POUNDS

270win
130 grain 3300 fps .436 BC

Nowif your deer are bigger than 290 pounds then maybe
you should go to the 264 win mag
