Does recoil come from the amount...

of powder used or the actual muzzle velocity?

Would increasing barrel length to gain velocity also contribute to more recoil? Or is this just the amount of powder used...all things being equal.
 
Well of cource! More powder means more bang? Right? Also, heavier bullets contribute, shorter barrels hit harder, due in part to weight reduction. Also the design of the weapon being fired. Straighter combs have less "percieved" kick, while weapons such as the ol faithful Winchester 94 with much more drop at the heel feel like they kick harder. Just some, hope others add to this.
 
Good Question! Recoil occurs because of 2 factors without getting overly complicated... There is recoil from the inertia of the bullet..the faster it goes the more recoil there is( the weight of the gun has a great effect on felt recoil as well, remember: "For every action there is a equal and opposite reaction"..Newtons Law) the "rocket or jet effect" of recoil , that is to say the larger the amount of powder the larger the amount of gas generated thusly, more recoil..This is why muzzle brakes work really well on certain cartridges, and only so so on others. Very poorly on a few. Lets look at a example... Take a 30-378 Weath. LOTS of gas for the brake to work..250-3000 works but not as effectivly Finally a 12 gauge slug.....lots of bullet weight,or recoil due to intertia....relativly speaking a small amount of powder gas with which to make a brake work....Hope this helps
 
lets take an example...

7mm mag:
gun weight - 8.5lbs
bullet weight - 150gr
powder - 75gr of XYZ
muzzle velocity - 3100fps
barrel length - 24"

The above produces 19.2 ft-lbs of recoil.

NOW! Change only the barrel length to 30" and figure you gain another 300fps to 3400!!
(and just figure the extra 6" of barrel didn't add any weight to the gun)

Do we have more recoil due to the gain velocity from the longer barrel?
 
YES YOU IN FACT DO HAVE MORE RECOIL..NEWTONS LAW,, BUT YOUR GAIN OF 300 F/SEC OFF OF A 7 MAG CASE IMHO IS OPTIMISTIC...BUT NONTHELESS, YOU WILL GENERATE MORE RECOIL DUE TO THE FACT THAT YOU ARE ACCELERATING THE PROJECTILE FASTER.

There might be more inertia recoil in the example given but because of the longer barrel less muzzle pressure would be present therefore the rocket effect would be lessened. Also the rifle would be heavier and all the extra weight would be forward. Less muzzle rise would occur and my guess is total recoil would decrease greatly.
