Difference in - and X

This thread "Just wondering how many know the difference between calibre and cartridge?" in the Long Range Forum above made me think about all the posters who don't know the difference in 6X24 and 6-24X. Maybe someone can post it in such a way beginners will understand.
 
The way I think of it is that 6x24 can be read as "six by twentyfour", and that 6-24x can be read as "six to twentyfour times". The 6x24 refers to a cartridge and the 6-24x refers to the magnification range on a scope.
