Got the girlfriend into hunting, so I decided that having a smaller caliber rifle for her to shoot would be a good enough excuse to buy a new rifle, right? I bought a Remington 700 ADL Youth Walmart special in 243. Brought it home and pulled it out of the stock, cleaned the bottom of the action, adjusted the trigger, put it all back together with a small piece of credit card between the front action screw and the recoil lug (I know its cheating but it will do for now until I decide what I'm doing with it). Pulled the crappy scope off of it and sold it and stuck a freebie Bushnell on it. It shot decent during break in, but it is definitely capable of more. Got it broke in and haven't shot it since the final cleaning on the barrel.

I want to have a lightweight carry rifle, with a youth stock for her. I have a Boyds on my other rifle, but I haven't decided what I am going to do on this one yet. I want to stay light and stay light on my wallet for now.

Having a girlfriend is always a good reason for building another rifle. Seems this rifle should follow a similar path as your 30-06. Get a good stock and have the action bedded into it. The laminate stocks from Boyd's would be a good choice here because you can cut the stock down the exact length to fit the GF. Once you have that done, you will be able to make a pretty good assessment as to the accuracy potential of the rifle and what your next step might be.

Happy New Year!

I thought so too! I believe she is wanting a walnut stock, so I suppose if she's going to shoot it I might as well make it like she wants it. I know that boyds sells a walnut stock but I wonder if I would be better off to find a take off of eBay and maybe bdl it too. I know I will need bottom metal, will the spring and follower transfer over, and will the magazine box need to be replaced?

You could go with a BDL stock and cut it down to fit. You're right, you would need some bottom metal for it. That is not a problem at all. BDL bottom metal will mate right up with your ADL action. Alternatively, you might be able to find a walnut stock that does not require bottom metal.

Another alternative is to show pics of the laminate stocks to your GF. When stained 'brown' they look a lot like a natural piece of wood (my brother has one stained 'brown').

u should have bought her a 788 remington 243 or 6mm:). put a syn.stock, bed the stock urself. finished. 85gr serria btpts, absolute shooter. i have the same in 223AI total tac driver. 6mm do have a long barrel 243 has short barrel.

If it was me I'd show her pictures from Boyd's and let her pick her own. Might see a laminate she likes or you can get a walnut stock there also (don't show her the pictures of the fancy grade ones:D). She will like it even more if she has some input.

Disclaimer; Been a looonnnnggggg time since I've had a girlfriend so could be I don't know what I'm talkin about.

have faith, i use stocky's stocks to buy my replacement stocks they r reasonable and have a very large inventory. i use the A-5 stocks. these r man stocks. they nice laminated stocks for remington adl or bdl stocks u know u can use both stocks mentioned, the bdl will require parts from brownells. easy to order and the customer svcs is very helpful. go to gunbroker.com to obtain parts. i have used them also to obtain. remember keeping ur gf happy keeps u happy. now go shine. i have built many rifles. to my likes.!!

Hard to complain with a .77" group. Wood stock eventually but for now I'm going to play with my rifle!

She decided on a Boyds Classic nutmeg. I'm going to be on the outlook for a bdl kit between now and next deer season so we should have her a dang fine rifle.

Won an eBay bid on this just a few minutes ago. $50, like new. Can't compain there.
