My doner gun is an older model 700 Remington Classic in 35 whelen made back when Remington cared. I would like to have a lighter weight hunting rifle that shoots 6.5 or 7mm 140 grn pills 3000+ FPS but not burn the the barrel out after 700-800 rounds. I might add I already have:

1) remy custom 6.5 CM 22 in bartlein barrel varmint contour

2)Stiller TAC30 in 260 24 in bartlein barrel not sure which contour but its a little thicker than the varmint. This one has a heavy Manners stock

3) Mod 700 5r Mil spec in 308

All the above are pretty heavy just wanting something lighter to hunt with and occasionally punch paper.

Thx guys

You could easily just build a rifle in the chamberings you already have, but lighter and for the purpose. However, since you have a long action, perhaps a 284Win? Barrel life is reasonable especially for a hunting/occasional target gun. You could step down to the 6.5-284 but barrel life will suffer. I shoot the 284 in F-Class but after doing so I've come to appreciate what a great balance it is between performance and recoil (not going up to a 7mmRM).

.280AI. Great round. Factory ammo available if you want. Good brass w. proper headstamp and tons of bullet choices in every weight imaginable for 7mm. From 120-195.

Push a 140 @ 3100+, or go to a 160-175 @ 2900-3000 for anything you want to hunt except maybe the big bears.

Bartlein #3b fluted @ 24-26".
Manners EH stock
Lighter weight scope

You will be under 9# easily for a great hunting rifle capable of shots on game at ranges you can accurately shoot out to 900+ with the heavier choices in bullets.

I was hoping someone would recommend the 280 AI just for reassurance. I almost bought one in the Kimber Hunter but heard they were very sketchy as far as accuracy goes. Plus I have the 35 that I never shoot anymore that already has a 2.5 LB trigger.

I suppose my bolt will work with the AI... Just remember when I had a 700 in 6mm br that I had re barreled in 65 CM and there was a question about the bolt face but mine ended up working out
Really appreciate the help guys

You're in 6.5PRC or .264wm territory with those requirements. If you want to go to the 7mm's then the 28Nosler or 7MM STW would both be great choices.

You can step up to the 26N if you want but of course you'll be sacrificing a considerable bit of barrel life if you do so.

6.5 Sherman or Sherman Short
280 Sherman or 7 Sherman Short.
2000+ rounds from the 6.5 140s at 3250
The Sherman Shorts are a .534" bolt face. WSM RSAUM size.
I still highly doubt 2000+ with any of the Sherman lines. That being said, I LOVE my 6.5 SS. 150 SMK @ 3117fps, had up to 3165. And the 140s up to 3200...

I'm back to the 6.5PRC or maybe 6.5-284 being pretty ideal for your purposes and desired velocity.

Put a 1:8 twist 26" tube on it and don't look back. The 6.5-.284 even uses the same 06/308 bolt face.
