OK, Looking to do a build "Just" for hunting "yotes"
Long distance. Bolt action
What's the thoughts of calibers.
Now having said this I want them to fall over dead
but I don't want to blow them apart.

I'm gathering parts for a 1-8 twist 20 BR right now. I know it's not as powerful as a 22-250, but trying to save the pelt as much as possible. I'm buying as many Berger 55s as I can right now for it.

Another one I would like to try is a 22 LRV from West Texas Ordnance.

Not familiar with either of those calibers, will have to research them.

I'm shooting the 108 Berger hybrid's at 2975 fps and I didn't see much damage to the hide's unless I hit the spine. First one was 905 yards then 563 yards and 331 yards and you can see no damage to the hide.

out at a 1000, but again I want something left of them, for making a coat, hats and other things, sell pelts from time to time.
For that range maybe a 22 Creedmoor, 22-250 AI, 243 WSSM, etc. Saving the pelt is where the 17 and 20 calibers shine. I have a 17/.223 and a 20 Practical AR15. And building a 20 BR in bolt action.

But for a 1000 yards you will want a 22 or bigger.

A lot of people went with 6.5 mm as a caliber in differing cartridges . I went with a 6.5 x 284 Norma for my 1000 yard rifle . Several people went with 6 mm 's as well . A lot of it depends on what weight of bullet you are thinking about using , how fast you want it to travel and how well you need it to perform in the weather conditions you have on average . I wanted to run a 120 grain bullet so went with a 1:9 twist and used Nosler ballistic tip bullets , they had a good BC did what I needed them to . The thing for me was to decide what bullet weight I wanted to use . Then decide how fast I wanted it to travel and how well I wanted it to perform at different ranges . It's a personal choice and a lot of things to consider do some studying figure out what you really want it to do for your needs and go from there .

Just to approach your question from a different angle, what bullet and what velocity are wanting? That will help narrow it down to what caliber

Not sure at this point. I need to learn what will reach out a 100 yards and do the job without blowing it apart.

Then I can go from there.
