Couple of basic questions about Weatherby

1.) Two cartridge families: 240-257-7mm-300-340, and, the five 378-based carts.
Do they use the same Mark V action or is there a difference in actions besides
the bolt face diameter ? Is there a "short" and a "long" action version ?

2.) What is the diameter of the action(s), or, the max diameter of the barrel
at the big end ? I know the Rems are 1.200~1.250.

Trying to get an idea how much bigger/stronger they are over the Rems.
Going to start a Weatherby project and need to know what is what.

The .240 Wby is not in the same cartridge family as the .257-.340 Wby family. The .240 Wby uses a standard diameter bolt face (.473"), whereas the the .257-340 uses a magnum bolt face (.531").

And yes, the .240 Wby uses a different action than that of the .257 Wby and larger calibers. The Mark V chambered in .240 Wby (and all other standard cartridges, such as .270 Win & .30-06) uses a 6-lug bolt and action.

The .257 Wby and larger calibers use a 9-lug Mark V action.

Weatherby Mark V barrels are supposed to be 1.060" shank.

What caliber are you looking to build? If it's a 338 Lapua or 378 Weatherby based then the Weatherby is the easy choice. Most everything else will fit fine in a Remington. Either are capable of fine accuracy.

there's also the older Weatherby Varmintmaster action. Rare as hell, and I think I've seen two or maybe three in my lifetime. The action is shorter, and came in either 22-250 or .224 WBY. I've seen exactly one .224 in my lifetime. The round is kinda like a belted rimless and belted Wasp that's been stretched.

For some reason my reply didn't post, anyway, I am going to build a
long barrel 338-378, I figured to use either a Mark V action or a custom
action. If I have to buy a whole donor rifle just for the action, then
I may be into a custom, just the way the $$$$ work out.

Long term build.

I suppose any barrel maker has blanks that are 1.300~1.400 diameter
(or whatever the Weatherby action is), I assumed they are bigger
than the Rem.

If your going that large and possible custom,youowe it to yourself to do a search on here for a 338 AX or Allen mag.I am a Weatherby fan also,took most my game with a 340 Wby

Sounds like I might likely be safe picking up a donor rifle in any caliber
except 240, in a Mark V that is.

Are the synthetic stocks all solid, Weatherby doesn't use any cheap
hollow plastic stocks do they ?

I do as well in both 30-'06 and .240 Weatherby Mag.
