Cost for rechambering into 260 Rem?

I'm currently in the planning stages of my first long range rifle. I've decided on caliber being 260 Remington, but haven't decided on a base for it. I'm torn between a Remington 700 or a Savage. I was curious what it would cost on average to rechamber a Remington 700 (in say .308) to a 260 Rem. Is there any certain caliber I should aim for in if I do want to rechamber one? I'd like to make this somewhat a budget build as I'm still in college. So what do you guys think would make the most sense? Buying a used R700 and rechambering, or buying a cheaper Savage (already chambered in 260 Rem) and upgrading stock/barrel on it. I am a huge fan of the Savage Accutriggers!

1. You are not talking rechambering, you are talking rebarreling. Big difference in cost.

A barrel blank will cost $300 +- and another $200 or so for chambering (or rehambering) to a 260.

2. www.savageshooters.com is the place to go to look for prechambered savage barrels.

Shilen sells prefits for under $500 and Fred Moro at Sharp Shooter supply has them on hand also.

Seeing a how it is a budget build I would go the savage route and watch savageshooters forum for the bargains.

Also, might want t consider the 6.5x47. Much better brass, same ballistics and not finicky. the 260s are sometimes finicky. I have both and like the 6.5x47 much better.

Thanks for the correction, I've been looking at the savage shooters from time to time also. What do you mean when you say the 260's can be finicky at times? I'm coming from a 243 WSSM, which was a pain in the *** to load etc.

It is just the experience of more than one, that the 260 can be finicky to find a good load as compared to the 6.5x47 or the creedmoor.

Does not happen with every gun, but it is more than occasional lets say.

Buy a savage in .260 and shoot it. Likely it will shoot great from the start. Boom, budget build.

Think that's what is going to happen. I have Model 12 in .204 Ruger that's bone stock and gets .25-.50 MOA all day so I guess I've been over thinking everything on this "build"!
