Considering a new scope

I have a 280AI, it has a sightron S3 6-24X50, mil-dot reticle. Its a great scope, but it would be nice to lighten up the gun a bit and have decided that I would never feel comfortable trying to shoot a deer any farther then 400 yards. A guy made me a great offer to trade for a S&W M&P 40S&W with a 357sig barrel. It would be nice to have a handgun. Not wanting to break the bank what would be a decent scope for making 400 yards shots??? I would like to stay with a 30mm tube.
