Compensator vs. muzzle brake

I have posted questions about muzzle brakes on this and other forums and received a wealth of information. At the end of the day I am still not sure I want to put a brake on my gun yet. This has brought another question to mind. Would a compensator (similar to what you would find on a military machine gun use to control muzzle climb) work on a bolt gun. During my career in the Military I have shot many guns equipped with compensators, everything from your M16's and M14's up to full auto crew served weapons. The M14 and M16 didn't seem any louder than a gun with just a bare muzzle. So I am hoping that a compensator similar to what you would find on an M14 would serve my needs with out the excess noise.

Is this a viable solution or am I way off on this one?
