Comfortable shooting magnum caliber

Everyone is different and so is every gun. My wife and I both found .308 in a Savage 99 Feather weight to have a lot of smack (especially with the old steel butt plate!). However, my son's 338 Win Mag in a heavier MD 77 Ruger we find is fun to shoot. Sure, after 10-12 shots you are starting to feel it, but if you are hunting, it is only the first couple that matter and you don't notice recoil for the most part. An old Enfield (in the picture with my sons elk) is a heavy gun, but with the 30-06 loaded to the gunnels, it gives a pretty serious pop too.
My advice would be to seek out some friends with various calibers and try them out at the range. Make your decision then.
