Just wanted to run this buy you guys.

Do any of you use these for elk loads? The rifle is a 270WSM that I have worked up a load with The matrix 165vld's and now there seems to be a chance that I may not be able to get them any more, I would like to go with something that won't go away??

I've never shot the silver tip, but when I encounter a barrel that has problems shooting the bullet that I want to shoot, all I have to do is try Ballistic Tips and the problem is solved. They're supposed to be the same bullet without the coating.

I might also suggest trying 150gr VLD. My 270wsm barrel loves rhem.

Hi Gary,

I know nothing of 165 VLD. I do know Partitions on elk. I'd imagine a 150 grain .277 cal Partition will kill elk.

I shot tons of them in 7mm Rem and 7mm STW. Decent bullet for coyotes and white tail but not a bullet I think I'd want to shoot at an Elk. I most certainly would not attempt to punch one through the shoulders of an elk.

You'd be much better off sticking with the Accubond or Accubond LR if you want to stick with Nosler for med/long range work and with the partition for short to medium range.

The Partition doesn't have the BC for long range accuracy but it will punch the shoulders of anything up to Bison. It's one of the more popular American Bullets in Africa where they really tend to be nuts for complete pass through shots with minimal damage to the meat and capes.

They are new on the US market but Peregrine bullets VRG-4 penetrate exceptionally well and will not blow up even at close range. They too are a great bullet for punching through the shoulders but while they will shoot clean through on chest cavity shots that don't hit the long bones you will probably have a track of fifty to a hundred yards or so with say a good clean "heart lung shot".

I have had good luck with them (Combined Technology Silvertip) in my 7WSM on White Tails and the best comparison to another bullet performance is the Ballistic Tip. For Elk I would recommend a bonded core bullet like the Accubond.

For elk with a 270 either the 150 Nosler Partition or the Accubond, not the LRAccubond would be my choice. The silver tip is just the Ballistic tip with the coating and is great deer bullet but for elk you need a tougher bullet. The Accubond in my experience is the best of both worlds. It flies like the Ballistic Tip and starts to expand like it but holds together like the Partition and keeps on trucking through things. I have read too many bad experiences of the LR Accubond blowing up at close range but do what they were designed to do at long range. The old Partition is hard to beat for inside 300 or so yards without doing some dialing on the scope as a game killer. It all depends on what your rifle wants to shoot well.
