Colorado success

This was my first year going west from Michigan. I did not get an animal on the ground but yet it was a huge success. I learned a lot. Mostly about how unprepared I was physically and mentally for the terrain. I also got to spend 9 straight days hunting with my dad. That alone was worth it. I attribute the ability to make the trip a lot to the people on this forum and rokslide. Between these 2 forums I gained enough information and motivation to plan the trip and go through with it. I have been reading and researching for quite some time and I wish I would have done it sooner. It was amazing and there are no words for the beauty that this country has to offer. Not just in scenery. its also the quality of people you meet along the way. We hunted unit 64/65 for 2nd rifle and it was busy but nothing like state land in Michigan. it was very enjoyable. The people we meet were great. I just wanted to say thank you for everyone here and all the help I received directly from questions I asked and just from shared information. I am excited to go back. We will be getting some points and trying again in 2 years for a draw unit that doesn't have the pressure for elk. We want a little less people and my dad would like some easier terrain. I hope everyone had a good season and enjoyed themselves. Good luck on the next one!

Great hunt and write up. Too often in this world we measure success by physical things. 9 days uninterrupted time with your dad enjoying God's creation is always a success

That looks like an awesome time. My dad and I went to west texas when I graduated high school. We didnt get anything either, but we got to explore like 10,000 acres and there was no one except border patrol around.

Sucked not getting anything, but was an awesome experience.

It's gonna be longer than 2 years, for a quality rifle draw unit. With that said, the DOW, hates mule deer! They hand out tags for other units, like they're going out of business!

I am not looking for top tier units. Just something with less pressure. I have 4 points in Wyoming and working on a couple more so I can afford a guide. I like diy but I also want local knowledge if I can get it. I am just happy to be out there getting after it.

That's what we do, as local, we just need any tag, we'll get back in there, away from as many roaded areas if need be and find an animal. #getwestern

My first ELK DIY was in Colorado, my buddy killed an elk opening day. Pack out was the most hated yet enjoyable thing I have every done. Love telling the stories about it. Felt like 2 a days in high school football on steroids. Anyways, we are always learning something new and the out of all the training I did I didn't realized how heavy a Ruger 7mm rem mag with a laminate stock could get!!

Great hunt and a great write up.

Not sure how I missed this a couple of weeks back, but glad I read it tonight.

I think you have your head on straight, and got a wonderful trip out of it with memories for a lifetime.

Those of us that hunt Colorado regularly have to push much harder each season to get back off the beaten path and away from the crowds. If you get back in to no-mans-land, you have a far better chance of being where the animals might be.

Good stuff, I can see that burn from my house! That's probably one of the most overhunted places in the area just because all the roads thru it. When the elk get kicked off the private you wanna make sure you either have a place to hide from all the flying bullets or a full blaze orange jumpsuit!
