I have a chance to Elk hunt Slater park/California Park this fall and would like to know what to expect for game numbers and hunter numbers.
Thanks, Frank

It looks like you will be hunting unit 441 or 214. The last population report for that area (including those two units and 3, 301, 4, 5 & 14) was 15,810. As far as hunter numbers go, that depends on what season you are hunting. You won't be able to know for sure though as these units get included in with a couple of other units.

We are going to try for second season over the counter, if there are none then we will find something else to do.

There are unlimited over the counter bull tags for that entire area for 2nd season, so you should be good. There might end up being extra cow tags available depending on which unit you end up hunting.

Hunted lower part of California Park off of road 80? two years past. There were lots of campers and foot hunters like me. The timber close to the roads had plenty of orange vests. The groups that had horses could get far back in and had some nice elk/deer the show for it. Cows were moving around good, but my group saw only bull before it vanished in thin air. We took two cows and young, dumb deer. Rent horses!

How is 214 for archery season? Could you hike a day in and get past the day hunters?

It's pretty small unit and archery tags 441 are for private land only. Steamboat lake and Pearl lake just across rd in unit 14 are pretty busy. One of the big problems this year since they move archery week later Aug 31 it's Labor day weekend. I'm heading up week earlier set camp up.

You always have which is better before muzzle loader or after. Nephew coming out to hunt archery drew deer tag so were going to be with him and if we don't connect on elk where heading to unit 14,16 and I may try 214. I'm hoping to get up to Steamboat lake for couple weeks fishing in July or first part of Aug and I'll know little more and be my first time hunting those units.

Sometimes just need a change.

Never hunted there, so I couldn't tell you. Get a mile or so off of any main road and I can guarantee you it won't.
