for a rifle that is going to be a hunting rifle and used for long range, with a harris swivel bipod on it for taking prone shots in field conditions, is there really that much advantage to an a3 type stock over say a remington classic pattern.

The biggest advantage the "A" series stocks have over the standard classic stocks is the vertical grip. This grip places your hand at a more comfortable position especially while shooting prone.
With a 2" forend, the A-3 is an excellent stock to use on a "carry/medium range rifle.
