Can 308 do everything you need a rifle to do under 600 yards?

Yep 10 twist with 185s in a 308 Win plain works on Big critters. Like the old saying goes, beware of the man with just one rifle. It applies in this scenario.

My M1A can kill 18x24 steel at 1000 yards with irons. Inside 600 with maxed out load 185 VLDH (brass one and done) and a scope, I'll take the shot. The receiver has been through 3 barrels and each lasted 32 pounds of powder in competition

Is there a thread here where guys are flexing their loading skills for long range 308. Im doing load development now and with a 178 ELDm loaded out to 2.805 and 43.6 grains of Varget I got .5-.75 inch groups. Opened up above and below this loading. Only slightly above 43.6 everything above there was less than an inch. Virgin Lapua brass. CCI LRP. Still getting used to shooting from a Chassis.

I shoot the ELDX with the same load

I love the .308 super accurate and easy on the shoulder. I try to keep my shots under 400yrds when hunting, At 600 yards its still very accurate, but at that distance i just call it the "paint scraper"

Here's a photo of steel @ 600 yards. 308win and 300wby. Big difference in energy.

THE group shows another cold problem. This has the Burris rings with the inserts. If it is near 0 the inserts shrink causing the scope to move to cause erratic shooting. This is different days and typical of the rifle's performance
Guess we need to start shooting ours at 0 deg Capt. We have 6 sets of them on rifles, but don't believe they have ever been out working in that kind of cold.

If it's that cold we are using something besides semis and they are all on semis. We don't have any on lever or bolt guns.

Guess I need to know more now that you have me wondering about it. Anybody else experience this stringing the Capt is seeing with the Burris inserts?

Another dedicated 308 hunter here. Elk and deer I don't hunt bear but my slow twist 1-12 kimber likes 150 and under. I keep my range to 400 as I shoot monos and worry about reliable expansion out further.

About to start load development for hammer hunter 127's. Anyone play with those in a 308 and have powder recommendations?

If theres a link here showing 308 Chassis hunting rigs, I would like to get some ideas about that as well. Or if anyone on this thread has one...show your do everything 308s.
I use MR2000, 47.5 grains with185 Berger Classic Hunter in a Borden .308 with 26 inch barrel, velocity is 2,850 fps. Had rifle custom made in 2017 and have taken Caribou, Moose and with 155 berger hunters at 3000 fps., have taken 14 deer and Antelope from 125 to 375 yds. Furthest any went was about 20 yds. Most dropped on the spot. Hart barrel, HS Precision stock, Borden Alpine Magnum action.

That 2000MR is the ticket for the 308s - velocity with precision for the icing. That load you have is the same I shoot in my double lug for 1000 yard matches launching the Jugs.

Yes. However, for me, you can push that to 800. I can kill anything earth at 800. To each his own, but it's more often the shooter. Not the weapon when things don't go as planned.
