Caliber for Pronghorn....

If.you or anyone else is considering a new cartridge for your deer/antelope sized needs or maybe even elk the 7SAW West Texas Ordnance is a phenomenal cartridge. I had Clayton make me a 7 SAW barrel for my Accuracy International and it is all that they say it is. I killed an antelope with mine last year.

6XC, 6.5CM, or 6.5-.284 would be my top 3 choices, depending on bullet choice.

6.5SS, 150SMK, 3113fps @ 183 yds, DRT

6.5SLR, 130 OTM, 2925fps, @ 391 yds DRT (hers) & 260ish yds, went 40ish yards as he was on a dead run when shot (his)

Nice Speed Goats.

The stars aligned, I drew a antelope tag in unit 33 in New Mexico. As this units west boundary is maybe 10 miles from where I live, I know the area well. Hunt coyotes in an area that has a good population of animals, so that is where I'll start. Shots could go from 200- 800 yards so caliber choice is wide open. I have in Savage custom bbl's a 6XC, 6.5X284, a Browning A bolt in 7mag, Custom Rem 700 in 300 RUM, and a Savage long range hunter in 6.5 Creed, as well as a AR 10 custom in 6.5Creed. I wouldn't consider any of them if they weren't capable of sub 1" 100 yd groups, and have shot all of them to 500 meters....trying to balance out bullet weight/energy of each choice for shots that might reach 5-6 hundred yards....I shoot competition out to 500 meters twice a month, so I am practiced at 200,3,4,and 500 meters (547 yards). Any input would be great...rsbhunter
270 wsm or 2506 works for me

Congratulations on the tag! Sounds like you have plenty of good rifle choices at your disposal. I think any one of them would have no problem taking down an Antelope. Personally I'd select the rifle that you are most comfortable with and that is the easiest to carry. And I'd probably leave the 300 RUM at home Antelope aren't very big or tough 😂

Of the rifles you listed, if you want the meat too, leave the 7mag and Rum at home. And there is absolutely no need to shoot a prairie goat square in the shoulder (as many said, they are not hearty or hard to kill) - heart, lung, head shots (I love the meat so I try to save all of it) with 25-06, 308, 264WM, 7STW and I have never had one go anywhere but down and that's out of 40 antelope in 25 yrs

High BC 6mm bullet in whatever flavor of cartridge is good medicine. If you expect lots of wind then a 6.5mm bullet/cartridge might help. Good luck !

With antelope, they're not hard to kill, they're hard to hit. Take the rifle you are most accurate with in FIELD shooting conditions. I've killed 75 to 100 antelope and taken a lot of new antelope hunters out. The biggest reasons for bringing back a tag are misses from bad range estimation and misses from expecting a perfect prone shooting position. Become comfortable shooting from sticks and off-hand. You have a great selection of rifles to choose from. Enjoy your hunt!

Well, I'm a fan of the quarter bore. 25-284
with good shot placement theres no meat loss, easy on the shoulder, very accurate and super speedy.
Having said that....the 6.5-284 is a great choice.
Congrats on the draw. Best of luck on your hunt.

Any of those calibers should be sufficient. I would take something that doesn't weigh a lot and is comfortable to carry as you might have to do some stalking.
