Brown bear Rifle

For me, it would depend on the 45/70. There are some very fast handling 45/70's that can handle higher pressure rounds. Baffalo Bore has 405 gr bullets at 2000 fps- 3500+ ft. lbs.

My 458 Lott load is a 500 gr. bullet at 2250.
Most of the heavier 45-70 are flat points designed for the lever actions. While adequate, the flat point hamstrings the ballistics and limits range. I have not evaluated the Hornady Flex tipped loads, but I think you can purchase those and load your own rounds. With a strong bolt action, single shot, or double rifle (wouldn't that be nice) in 45-70, you could get some impressive loads using pointed bullets. Just my thoughts.

It is a Leupold 1x6 with a heavy duplex.

darn nice set up, thing is as nice as it is and I'm kind of handy with a rifle but I'd hate to have to make a hurried shot on a brownie that was about to get away @ 350 yards with a combo that drops 35" at 350 yards. Just saying, most of mere mortals would be mightily challenged to make that shot.

Now give my 300 Winnie that I'd been shooting chucks with all summer from 300-600 and I'd be quite comfy. :)

Obviously a situation like this isn't going to arise very often but it sure could in certain areas. I just like to plan for the craps happening moment. We all have our choices to make eh

500 B&M magnum, 21" barrel, overall length 41" with Winchester mod 70 action. .500 cal 500 grain hydrodynamically stabilized Brass solid by Cutting Edge Bullets co. With a 125 zero the impact varies less than an inch from 25 to 100 yards. A practiced rifleman could make one shot do the job out to 250 yards with a simple duplex crosshair. The energy at two hundred yards is equal to the Buffalo Bore 405 grain loading at the muzzle. It's a true stopping rifle and will killem out yonder.

Those B&M rifles are really cool, I had never heard of them so I took a look at their website. The Ultra mag case cut down is a cool idea and the ballistics are very impressive.

I am not particularly recoil sensitive- but my 458 Lott was BRUTAL at 9.5 lbs. (500 grain at 2300) until I added some weight, etc. I can't imagine a 7 lbs. rifle with the same ballistics.

LOL...Yes someone has to be standing behind it when the trigger gets pulled. The key to it being shootable is in large part the stock it's in.

Here's a couple of links for the guides among us. If you're looking for a quick handling rifle of the the lever action persuasion for fast follow up shots for wounded bruins in cover. Both articles are great reading.

The load you posted with a 500gr solid brass bullet, not lead, which means long bullet.

That load is well over what they had posted in the articles you linked, they were getting 1850-1950 fps range with the Hornady 500gr, which is a shorter bullet given the lead in it, meaning you can get more powder in the case, meaning higher velocity and less pressure then a longer bullet that'll take up more case.

Is that a hypothetical load you posted?
Or are you just loading to much much higher pressures?

Looking at Cutting Edges site they also note a G1 ballistic coefficient of .190 and you have .345 in your data? That is a large difference

Their data sheets also note that their "solid brass" projectiles are "not approved for lead free hunting," which seems odd to me, perhaps they aren't so much "solid" brass? Not familiar enough with them myself to know what's going on there. Though given the one articles picture of the 425gr cutting edge being longer than the 500gr Hornady, the 500 will certainly increase that distance.

I'd imagine with a 1" shorter (negligible difference really) barrel but with a longer 500 gr bullet you should likely be seeing 1800-1850fps even pushing higher PSI than they with the Hornady 500gr.

Planning on a once in a lifetime brown bear Alaskan hunt in a couple years. Have a 300 Win Mag that shoots 220 Nosler partitions and 200 Nosler partitions quite well. Don't really want to buy another rifle but should I move up to a 338 class? Thinking of either a 33 Nosler, 338 WM or 338 ultra??? Opinions???
my vote is 338 ultra with 300 gr bullets

Your 300 is just fine providing it is ultra reliable and durable. It should fit you like a fine shotgun and don't hang a lot of crap
on it that will hang up in the alders.....ammo pouches etc. If it's got a floor plate, glue it shut or duct tape it. Your scope cover should be easy and water tight. Years back, we used pieces of inner tube stretched over the scope.....harder to find today. Now I go to a physical therapist friend and get a piece of .....I think it's called Theraband or some such....your bullet choice is good.

Good luck on your hunt.....Where will it take place?
Yeah....pretty well hit it out of the state with this post.
