If you are willing to handload and want a big cartridge magnum, there are a lot of improved cartridges to pick from. I ran a 338-378 Weatherby before the 338LM became the new rage.
With Remington Ultra options like the 338 Edge and improved 338 Norma Magnums, a 600 yard shot on most game animals is going to put them down pretty hard.
While it would work, I think it is generally overkill for most hunting situations contemplated in this thread.
