So I just ordered a Shilen 5 1/2 30" blank for my 7mm Remington Mag... My question to all of you is: How long should I have my gunsmith finish the barrel?
I was thinking 28 inches finished. But it will (most likely) have a break and I want to make sure it retains rigidity. Do I go shorter? I also want as much fps as possible and know I could use the inches. Do I go longer?
I will be using it for hunting high in the mountains (800 to 1000 distances) and need it to be accurate and fast. What is the best length to optimize both accuracy and speed? Is the 5 1/2 thick enough to go 28 inches and maintain accuracy?
If I need the length I'm not worried about the extra weight and awkwardness for packing. I'll carry it wherever she needs to go.
Comments please.... Thanks in advance.
