Barnes TTSX 150 or 168 gr in .308 Win?

I have loaded the 152 Hammers in my 308 win. It is a 20" as well. 2828 FPS with CFE223.

If I use this for my hunting rig, I will go with the 124 HH. I am saving the 152s for my 300 WM. Speed is your friend with the monos. BC is negligible with these as they aren't going far with a 308 win. Utilize the laser effects of little drop.

I load 150 grain ttsx in my .308. I have used 4064 and varget in my hunting loads. Not too much difference.. I suggest using whatever powder you have. I take shots out to about 250 yards and have had good expansion inside the carcass. Lung shots and head shots. Learned i my old age that a deer's heart & lungs are a big fat target. Shooting for sub moa accuracy is not a requirement, but fun when bullets are worked up. Lung/heart shots they run about 40 yards before piling up. Plenty of blood trail. For deer with Barnes, my view is faster is better than more mass (heavier).

150gr. I have 165's loaded in my buddies 308 right now, and the rifle likes a low node at about 2500fps. I am going to change powder to speed them up hopefully, or switch to 150gr to get some speed.

The slow 165gr put the smack down though on a cow elk for him. They work, but I want him to start with more speed.

I think your going to like that combo its hard to go wrong with Varget and Lapua brass and 210M is just what I'm using. put a light crimp in the shortest channel and shoot em. I started just like Barnes says at 48 grains and worked up to 52 accuracy was so good at 49, 49.5 and 50 I just stuck with 49.5.

Good luck and shoot straight y'all.
If your going that high with Varget strongly suggest WW brass for its capacity!

What velocities are you getting with each of these.

Rifle didn't like the 124s. Just finalized a 166grt Hammer Hunter with45gr N550 for about 2650 fps with my 20" tube..

My goal was a woods gun that was effective to 400 yards with the intent to shoot most of the time under 300 hundred. I have a 16.5" Ruger compact laminate in 308 win, so I'm constrained by bullet velocity.
Barnes ttsx bullets each have different min opening speeds.
When I talked with Barnes this is the current data I was told for 308 cal bullet min opening velocities. Note Barnes 150gr ttsx boxed ammo opens up at 1500 min but they don't sell that bullet for hand loading.

130 TTSX 1800
150 TSX 1800
150 TTSX 2000
168 TTSX 1500

I ran the chrono barrel speeds that I'm getting with my 16.5" ruger through a ballistic calculator and even with faster speeds of the 130gr ttsx the 168 for me is a better fit.
the 130 gr gets me out to 380 yards before I drop below the min speed of 1800 fps.
the 150gr is 270 yards where I hit 2000 fps.
the 168 gr is 640 yards where it hits 1500 FPS.
Thank goodness for ballistic calculators I never would have thought that a heavier bullet Mono would have been a better fit at 400 yards than a 130 gr
Hope this is useful to others.
Cheers.

Thank you for your valuable analysis.

Please give us a report.I have thought of that bullet as well.
Tested Benchmark and N-133. Both did well averaging 1" from my Springfield armory M1A. Benchmark gave ES of 2 while N-133 varied ES from 11 to 53 fps. Best group was .6 with N-133 and ES 20 fps. Best group with BM was .914 and ES 11 fps
Max speed for both powders was 3140 fps. I didn't push them hard due to the op rod in the M1A

I shoot 130 ttsx at 3050 from my 20 inch barrel kills dead
