I use my 30-06 extensively and just completed a new left handed 30-06 that I plan on using even more, even for long range hunting on Elk and Deer size game. The 30-06 is definitely underrated in todays high tech world where everybody seems to be leaning towards the 6.5x284., 6.5 SAUM, 28 Nosler, so on and so on. Anyway, I'm looking for a load to use with these Barnes LRX bullets and I'd really like to see velocities in the 2950-3000fps (or more) range without excessive pressure. Anybody have any loads that go a little faster without excessive pressure? I'd actually like to have a couple of hot loads for the Hornady 178gr. ELD-X and the Berger 168gr. VLD Hunter too. I understand ballistics and I'm sure that someone is going to want to school me on ballistics and tell me I don't need to have a round pushing 3000fps. I understand, but that is what I'm looking for to shoot out of this particular gun. I did load testing and the Berger Hunting VLD shoots far better than any of the other rounds I tested while the gun absolutely hated all of the Nosler bullets I shot. The Hornady SST+ and GMX bullets shot well but I didn't have any of the ELD-X bullets to try out yet. I also didn't have any of the Barnes LRX bullets either. The Federal, Winchester and other bullets I tried all shot okay, nothing spectacular though.
Any information on hot loads would definitely be appreciated but please don't give me a lecture on ballistics and tell me why I don't need 3000fps velocities. To me it's simple, I want to load and try some ammunition that push the LRX, ELD-X and Hunting VLD 3000fps and see how they work out in this particular gun. Thanks everyone for any information!
When I just read this post, I saw that it comes across as a little curt or even rude. I didn't mean it to be that way at all. I just wanted to be clear that I understand ballistics and the pros and cons of different velocities. With that being said, I want to test a few rounds that push these bullets in the neighborhood of 3000fps., with the exception of the ELD-X of course, it is a substantially heavier bullet. If someone has a 3000fps load for the ELD-X, I guess I'd really love to see that too. It might be my new elk killer! Thanks, Stoti
