Hey no kidding I'm just now getting to the electronic stuff , this guy even made his own mini flashlights out of aluminum.

No kidding , he was the genius type , town historian, town postmaster , town gunsmith, tail gunner in army Air Force and flew 50 missions ,not 25 ,50 , and his plane was shot down on the 51st .
he could out cuss anyone ,
If I heard a lot of yelling and investigated , more times than not he would be working on an old lawnmower! And cussing it out at the top of his lungs.
If you happened to start a conversation with him , you don't get to talk he talks nonstop, no chance or you.
Alomost forgot about the air gun range upstairs shooting from back wall of one bedroom down to end of hallway 30' ?
Or so , with an electric target return.
I, shot up there with him , and showed him that a .177 Benjamin Sheridan , could keep up with his fancy imported rifles.

I agree that the box with the red bulb is probably a dark room timer. The other looks like a flashlight bulb checker to me. He could just touch the bulb to it without having to screw each one in.

It may be a homemade dark room "safe" light. Not what you think. Its a light that is used provide safe light that does not affect the developing paper.

One heck of an interesting guy. I would have liked to meet him.

We have a similar timer box here at work to run a centrifuge for a specific time. Could be dark room red light where he sets the timer for however long a process will work then the red light goes off and other light comes on.
