Back Country LR Rifle Advise- need help!

I built a lightweight LR gun earlier this year by accident, and I can tell you that I think it would be quite packable for elk and bou and other animals in mountainous terrain where you have to pack.

I call it my LWLR Rifle (Light Weight Long Range Rifle). It's a trued and worked Rem 700 LA, mated to a 26" 1:12 twist Rem varmint contour barrel chambered in .30-06 AI, and bedded into a B&C Medalist stock with a DNZ 1-piece GameReaper mount, and a Kahles Helia KX 3.5-10x50 with the 4D reticle on top.

With my Berger 185 VLD load's estimated velocity of 2,861 fps (haven't gotten to chrono it yet), and the 4D reticle, and a 100 yard zero. I can get out to 800 yards (793 to be exact), without needing to adjust the scope's dope, by using the top of the bottom reticle bar.

With a 100 yard zero, the dots are as follows: 100, 250, 362, 462, 550, and if you use the top of the bottom bar, 793.

If you shot that same load with a 500 yard zero, the top of the bottom bar would get you to 1,000 exactly.

Or you could just buy a scope with adjustable turrets, but I don't know of any that are anywhere remotely as light as the Helia series scopes.

Curious what it weighs. My model 116 with NF 5.5-22 56 is right around 11.5. I am installing a 28.5 Schneider in savage varmint contour with fluting. The barrel feels lighter than the 24" stock fluted varmint barrel.

Mine is either right at, or just under 10 lbs. I mean, even with a 100 yard zero, a rifle under 10 lbs, that is more than capable to 800 yards without any adjustment is pretty cool, IMO. I mean, for a backpacker or stalk-hunter who could really ask for more?

Agreed. I have a leupold with the Boone and Crockett reticle plus m1 turrets in 4.5-14 x50. This scope is significantly lighter and with a 20 moa lightweight rail gets me beyond 1000. For long range precision on small targets I like the NF, but it is a beast to pack.

I think someone already posted on here about the Kimber Montana,I recently just bought one ,and I have to say I was skeptical at first but it weighs 6.8 with a Leu 4-12x14 AO ,and adjustable turret, caliber is a 280 AI , I tried some 150 LRAB out in it ,and it showed some promise then I went to the 168 berger and it shot really well about a .65 at 100 with a 4 shot group. I would not hesitate to shoot this gun out to 600 yards at anything , great gun very shoulder friendly when packing in the hills, I had some work done to it but all said, and done 2K.

I did not want to hi jack this thread too much but anyway my Kimber is a bit of a Frankenstein, a gun smith I know had a blued Kimber 06 action, stainless 280 AI barrel ,and a Montana stock kicking around so I had him true action ,re-crown barrel put a slim shoe trigger set to 2 LBS . He then put it altogether ,and full length bedded the rifle , I also had him paint stock a nice green colour. He then put lapped light weight talley rings on it for me, and this winter I will have barrelled action powder coated a similar green to off set stock , and if there is much gain to be had I will put an MPI light weight stock on it but I am thinking that it will not be worth the $$ for a few OZ . The gun is topped with a VX II 4-12x40 AO and shoots awesome with 168 VLD.

Was this what you had in mind? Originally a Ruger M77 mk2 all weather, 26 inch Pacnor barrel, Timney trigger set to just under 2 lbs, Boyd's laminated stock, pillar bedded, Limbsaver pad, Dead mule recoil reducer inside the stock, Vortex Viper HSLR SFP 4-16x 44mm scope with Custom yardage turret, shoots Berger 180 VLDs under a minute for the first three shots (skinny barrel warms up quick and the groups grow, but a great hunter!) As you see it weighs 10 lbs 3oz on my grocery scale. The shot group is me checking my 200 yard zero.

Nice looking rifle Mud! Now you need to run a Sherman reamer into that chamber. With that exact combo, 63 grs. of IMR4831 or 60 grs. RL17, you could reach 3000' with accuracy. Just sayin'........rich

Dang.....If it was carbide, it could cut chamber and dies. I'll let you know.

You could sell your A.I. dies and I could sell you the custom bushing/micrometer Whidden dies plus use of the reamer for $250 shipped to you. You wouldn't regret it........Rich
