AR-Comp powder testing in 223

In these days of dwindling powder choices I expanded 223 reloading to include AR-Comp powder. You can load @ 2000 rounds out of a 8# jug using 28 grains of powder. Max load for the 55 gr. on the Allient powder sight listed 25.6

So I loaded 10 each at 25.3 25.6, and 25.9

62 gr. was not listed so I guessed at 24.1 and 24.4

I also took along previously loaded 55 and 62 grain using CFE powder.

I was using my match grade .223 24 inch Stainless target barrel. Just a super accurate AR to shoot and CFE is a very accurate powder. AR-comp lived up to what it said it could do. The 25.9 avg 3340 fps with a 12 fps ES. The 62 gr were slower at 3100 with a 17 ES

My 20 inch barrels generally lose about 200 fps. So these are an accuracy round not hot rods.

Did you have to use a drop tube to get 25.6 grs in the LC case?
What was the velocity with the 55 gr bullet and 25.6 grs load?
What was the accuracy like with this load?

For comparison on my weather conditions CFE with 28.0 grains was 3165 AVG.

25.3 ar-comp can go right in the case from a powder knocker the 25.6 about fills the case to the top and makes for a compressed load. 25.9 required the tall drop tube.

25.6 3291 fps


I need to get to the bench rest shooting range. My testing in the hills near me is not ideal. The W 748 which I posted a picture is probably the best. I would also place ar-comp and maybe CFE and TAC in the same accuracy range.

My story is I started out using others advice against my inner thoughts and ended up with a 1:7 20 inch 5.56 and it never shot well even with 75 gr match. Just too much slop. Then I tried a Wylde 1:9 20 inch stainless. The groups got smaller. So I went to a match grade 24 inch 1:9 and it just shoots everything nice.

Thanks for the info. 25.3 grs AR-Comp sounds good with 55 gr bullets for what my friend wants.
