I am purchasing a 280 Remington Improved 40 degree (original P O Ackley) rifle.
RCBS makes the correct die but it takes 10 to 12 weeks special order. I read where Redding says you can use the Nosler Saami one along with their Competition Shell holder that is .014 deeper than the standard #1 that will work. I see the Compettion Shell holders package they sell but do not see a .014. So, can anyone help me on this?

If you absolutely certain that it is what you say it is, order the dies, and save the hassle. If you have ANY question at all, get a chamber cast and see exactly what you have on your hands. The 280 AI has about 4 versions out there... each take a different "finesse" to handle.

Yep, like Joe said, if you're 100% sure as to the chamber specs, order the correct dies and wait. If you're not 100%, get a chamber cast or get a box of factory .280 Rem ammo, and shoot those 20 rounds, and send 5 of the cases to Redding or RCBS, and they can custom make you a die set for your specific chamber specs.

If you are wanting your die to bottom on the shell holder and leave the case .014" longer, all you need is a shim that has a 1/2" hole in it and is .014" thick.

I don't own anything but standard shell holders. I've always used shims and feeler gauges to make small sizing adjustments.

You can use the same reamer for both chambers. The proper head space and go gauge is the key.

Setting your dies correctly is the other thing. get the correct dies for the shorter cartridge (The original 280 AI dies) or a set of Hornady new dimension dies that will adjust to different lengths with in reason)and there will be no issues because it will size both depending on how it is set.

I recommend staying with a standard shell holder to keep things simple and to eliminate the chance of using the wrong shell holder that could cause problems. If you need to "Tweak" the sizing a few thousandths, placing a brass shim or feeler gauge between the case and the shell holder will work.

Hope this helps

Thanks for everyone's input. I got an email back from Redding and they do offer the special shell holder for the .014 issue . I do like the spacer shim idea. So problem solved. Thanks again, Alan

The only time I've used spacers in that sense is dealing with trying to mitigate lead shaving when loading pistol cases...:D
