Ok. Before I'm mugged, yes I know it's not the best choice. Yes I have 308, 300wm,7mm,7stw,338lapua.
I'd like to know if anyone would share some decent data for 243 for 1000yd plinking steel. Cost effective, great for learning to read wind, .
Rifle specs-
Stiller's Tac 30 action, bartlien 27" hvy 1-8 twist
Jeweled trigger, KSG Chassis, Leupold MK6
3-17x50 Mil scope. Thanks guys.

Why 1000yds? Does it shoot at 300yds, or 600yds?
If this is for competition, there are plenty of reasons it won't be competitive.
If for hunting, then again, why a 243win for 1000yd hunting shots?

243win is a deer hunting cartridge. You can get within 600yds of deer, or it isn't hunting. If you endeavor to extend beyond that utility, with this cartridge, you better plan for a higher rate of barrel & brass replacements. And this is why it's not competitive.

This is my opinion. That's all. I'm sure there is somebody out there that does odd things with a 243win. There is probably someone out there shooting 1kyds with 12ga slugs..
If I wanted 1kyd target shooting in 24cal, I'd go 6BR or 6Dasher. These are better designed for that purpose.

Nothing wrong with shooting a 243 at 1000 yards, it'll help you read wind for sure and i'm assuming you'll use it for mid to long range deer hunting too.
I have a 6mm Rem for the same application, it's cheap to shoot, recoil is very mild so my wife is more likely to practice long range with me.
I've only been able to take my 6mm out to 820 so far but it's more than up to the task.
I have a 7 twist and am shooting 115 bergers at 3150 with RL26, your barrel might not work with anything over 105 so I'd try those out and definitely give RL26 a try.

108 ELD-M and 115 DTAC's (HBN coated or not) both perform identically for me with RL-23. 39grains is a soft load around 2780 from a 26" barrel. Work up to somewhere near 44gns max for well over 3k fps. Great for beating the wind, not great for learning it though. It's too forgiving to make you a great wind reader.

With heavy bullets it loves powders on the really super slow side.

Running heavies in a .243 and you're looking at a flat shooter and softie on the shoulder. With 115's I was only burning something like 6 mils at 1000yrds.

Keep your loads away from max pressures and the brass will last a good long time without a excessive trimming.

It's a shooter I already have that I'm just playing with. I have plenty of rifles capable of 1k to 1 mile. Just something I do when I get bored. Not looking to build one right now.

I have about 250 Sierra 107gr SMK BTHP. Any thoughts? Not as high BC as Berger's or ELDs but how do you think they will fair?

That combo will work well for plinking out to 1000yds. I shoot my 16" Bbl suppressed 243 out 800 often.

Your 243 as configured is going to be superior to a 308 for what you are planning to do. So long as you use efficient High BC bullets, it will be just fine for poking holes in paper.

morning, the US Army was looking at making the
243W caliber, bolt gun as a sniper rifle. took the 6.8R
over the 243W. both the calibers use the
vintage 308cal casing as a reference. the 243W
is a excellent varmint-deer caliber. I owned
6 243W and AI's. various barrel lengths and configurations.
never shot to 1K. one my favorite cartridges.

I shoot my 1:10 twist with my hunting bullet (Hornady 100 gr SPBT interlock) out to 800 on milk jugs all the time. I agree with the statement that its a good round to practice LR with. Never tried it out to 1000 as I'm out of elevation on that gun at 800.

I find it hard to believe that some say the 243 isn’t good for anything yet it’s the rifle they buy for their wife and children????????? I used to shoot a 300 win mag to 1000 but after putting a 1X8 twist barrel on my 243 and playing with it - I sold the 300. The drop at 1000 is considerable less with the 243 and the wind drift was about the same (105’s in 243 vs 168 in 300 win mag) plus the 243 didn’t try to knock the fillings out of my teeth. The longest shot on a coyote so far was 1233 yards and the longest shot on a deer (the one in the pic by my name) 1032 yards. On the deer I couldn’t get closer as there were deer between us and didn’t have time or permission to come in from the other side, it was shoot now or let him go. Hit in the spine he dropped in his tracks, when I butchered him the 105 Amax had broken his back and continued on out the other side.

I use mine with 105s no problem. They're not sexy fast but the high bc and easy shooting/loading give me a lot of high volume value
