Hello , I'm new to your forum and I want to learn how to reload soon.
I will be reloading 3006 and I have a couple manuals so far.
Does anyone have experiences with ballistic tips loaded to minimum velocities at a range of 200 yards with 165 grain pills for whitetails ?
Thanks for any replies.

First question...why minimum velocities?

Anyways, they will work great on them. 3006 with any bullet going 2500+ fps will kill a deer. 165 grain is just about perfect for what you describe. If you load the 165 ballistic tip and get ~2700 fps you should be able to sight in 1.5 inches high at 100 yards which would put you like 2 inches low at 200 so basically you do not to compensate for distance. You can simply point and shoot.

Ballistic tips work great on deer. If you hear anything about them "exploding" this is usually them being pushed really fast 3000+fps at close ranges. Still kills the deer, just does excessive meat damage.

powders to look into: RL17, IMR4350, H4350 (yes this is different than IMR4350). IMR4350 is a popular powder for 3006 and 165s.

I agree completely.
90% of the time I shoot Berger except when I hunt. I have just had better terminal preformance from Nosler but better BC out of Berger. That round and that bullet will do well for you.
Welcome.

Thanks guys
About the speed , I know cold weather slows things down and people come close to published velocities.
Factory and hand load data work is done in a controlled work environment

So this has got me thinking, that if I work a load close to max without too much pressure , then I will be at a velocity during cold temps. that will do a good job out to 200 yards.

Has anyone chrono'd factory ammo to see if they were even close to their velocity ?

If someone could give me their experiences with hand loaded ballistic tips ,that would be great , like distances , muzzle vel. exits and are they tough enough for a mid shoulder shot into the muscle ?
I know they are really designed for behind the shoulder , but I'm curious !

Thanks again.

I have used ballistic tips in my 3006. I have shot deer at 300 yards in the shoulder. Broke both shoulders and exited no problem. They arent as explosive as some make them out to be. I switched to accubonds as I also use this rifle for bear and elk but if I was still only hunting deer it would be ballistic tips. I had more deer drop and die right there with the aballistic tips than I do with the accubonds...granted they don't run far with the accubonds either. Under 20 yards but nothing beats dropping a deer in there tracks. And to top it off ballistic tips are half the price of accubonds. My chrono showed 165 remington core lokts about 100 fps slower than what the box said. Those were the only factory loads i chronod. My ballistic tip loads were going 2800fps.

Sorry have not loaded noslers in 30-06 but I have loaded Speer 180 grain to listed minimums in the Speer loading manual and can say that in the range you are talking about I have put down deer with those loads. Loaded IMR 4831. I would say that at a max of 200 yards a minimum load in a 30 cal bullet will put down a deer. You should have ample velocity with the lighter grain bullet to have ample penetration. I would check to make sure the bullets jacket is welded to the core I.e. The partition rounds to ensure max weight retention. If any of this rambling was of help I'm glad otherwise sorry if I was confusing and good luck with your load development. IMHO don't overthink it for a close range kill.

I used to shoot nosler ballistic tips from a 7mm mag for years. Factory ammo first then handloads. The factory ammo never came within 100 fps of published velocities. Both factory and handloads were very accurate. I pushed my 150 grain bullets to 3250 fps from my 7mm mag and they shot sub .5 moa. I am guessing I killed 15-20 deer with these bullets and never had one travel more than 5 yards after being shot. Most were dead before they hit the ground. They will cause considerable damage, but they do the job. I think the 165 grains from a 3006 will do fine on deer.

Good Luck

130 gr. bt 270 works very well on deer. 20 deer or so with mine. Most of them dropped right there. Mine are seated to the base of the neck.

So is everyone's reloading work close to the published data by Nosler and Speer as far as most accurate powder tested ?
Thanks again !

I just got my 06 brass deprimed and sized getting ready to do some load work up..

I bought the Accubonds in 165 and 185. They had realoder 22 listed as best accuerarcy for the one so hopefully I will have some of my initial results in a few days. Two of the IMR's are also going to be tested out (I have had the IMR for a while). I forget which ones off top of head. I've been able to get some shotgun powder recently so my brain has been wrapped around on what I was low on oe out of out and then getting it.

I am also going to test out some Berger VLD's both weights and Sierra 165sp's.

IMR 4831 56 gr. 24 inch barrel 3080 Fps for mine . Barrel length will make a difference . 270 130 gr. NBT that is.

I used a 130 gr BT in a 270 win with 22" barrel this year. 59.5 H4831SC gave me 2960 fps at muzzle. Both deer shot behind the shoulder, one at 40 yds, the other around 140 yds. One ran 40 yds, and the other dropped right there without taking a step. Huge exit wound, and the 140 yd shot split into two, one exiting off shoulder and the other through the ribs.

I shot the AB 130gr last year and got very little expansion and switched to BT at the advice of a friend. The deer shot with an AB ran 40 yds after being hit behind the shoulder.

All three of the above were heart shot, so I don't think expansion would have mattered, but AB left very little blood trail so tracking would have been more challenging if it ran a good ways.

The pic is of the deer shot at 40yds, tore a good 5 inch hole in off side ribs.

Dhammer, keep me posted !
I would like to know about primers.
Are winchester large rifle primers any good and what about CCI LR primers , is there a difference ?
