Am I a Redneck?

You guys all act like "redneck" is a derogatory term...
I would have to find the source, but as taught to me, the term "redneck" came from West Virginia coal mine union organizers, who wore red bandana around their necks for easy identification.
Maligning them as stupid, poor white trash was an attempt to discredit them.

The term redneck goes back further than the 1920's when the coal miners started using the term. If you google James K Vardaman, you will see he was using the term for his supporters back in 1903 and he was not using it in a derogatory sense. There is a sense of pride in being a redneck. There always has been.

Most of the "rednecks" I've known are pretty proud of it. Having been on the receiving end of derogatory ( Japanese American here) comments I'm more concerned with the intent rather than the word.
