It is possible to make a .284 feed from an Argentine. I have one in a 6.5x284. An old time gunsmith cut a groove in the lower flat of the follower. It shallow and elliptical. Feeds 'em like greasy sausages.

Shroud and bolt scream Santa Barbara. Bottom metal looks like a cheap aftermarket. The SB bottom metal is an excellent piece with a slightly longer front tang and bow release.

How about a .280 Rem or 7x57? Make sure the mag is at least 3.350" and not blocked off for the .308.

And yes, find a Mauser 'smith.

A B&C stock would work just fine. They run about 2.25lbs.

I think Carlos is correct, I've had two Santa Barbara Mausers in the past, and neither of them had that type of magazine release. I still have one thats been converted from 7x57 to 7mm Rem Mag, its been a real tack driver. In saying that the only issue i've ever had with it is that one must feed from the Mag into the chamber, slowly,,, it doesn't like having rounds slammed up the breach, they tend to catch the nose of the round on the top of the chamber. I have large ring Fn 1924 med length build ina 25-284 284 and two 7x57 Mausers they all are shooters the rails need too be opened just a little for smooth feed but isn't absolutely necessary yes a 284 will work on a 1909 argentine

Is that Oregunsmithing? The .284 case can be made to feed, but it ain't "drop-in". There is nothing mythical about the 1909 Argentine action. It's a standard length 1898 military Mauser made by DWM. The big deal with the 1909 is the 'factory' hinged floorplate. I have seen 1 std length military '98 altered to feed the .300WSM. Whoever did that metal work was slick! I made the stock for it. Swift Bullets bought out Ted Blackburn bottom metal, and they make custom bottom metal designed for several cartridges, specific. Sunny Hill Enterprises makes nice, custom bottom metal, also. Most '98s will feed AI cartridges with very little, if any, work. Just make sure you have enough magazine length, or count on alterations to make it work properly. Count on feed work for any cartridge with a larger than .473 head diameter.

All of my Mauser builds feed as smooth as butter you just have too do them right it's not rocket science

My JC Higgins Belgium FN Mauser is in 270 win. But for easy conversion I figured a 280 rem would be the easiest. I'm fairly certain with RL26 I can get a 180 gr Berger or ELDM running 2800 fps.

Like I said earlier ER Shaw could convert to magnum if you wanted. So could any competent smith or machinist. Feed rails and bolt face will need smithing. The magbox is the limiting factor for magnums, mine is 3.400" interior dimension. But I think a 7mm RM would be okay. A 284 Win needs minor adjustments to the feed rails I hear. An Ackley might also. A 280 Rem no need to adjustment the feed rails. So a fast twist 270 Win, 280 rem, 30-06 will be the easiest. With time and money any of the cartridges mentioned can be done. The hard part is deciding which one lol.

Here's info on calculating magazine dimensions for a magazine rifle. D'Arcy Echols had a formula that I kept squirreled away for the longest time. Where it resides now is a mystery.

Nice! I've used Mark Xs, Santa Barbaras, 1908 & 1909 Argentines as well as 1910 & 1936 Mexicans. All made fine rifles.

Jim Kobe in Minnesota does excellent Mauser work. I used to use Harry McGowen until his passing.

I have two Santa Barbara action rifles in the form of Parker Hale 1200 rifles. One is a .243 Win and the other a .270 Win. They were also made in Magnum cartridges most commonly the 7mm Rem Mag and .300 Win Mag.

I wouldn't be afraid to make one a magnum, as long as you're willing to pay for it. Really with doing this it all boils down to budget. I don't know anyone in the Phoenix area, you might try Score High in Albuquerque NM if you don't find a local smith.

yes shortgrass Wayne York owns oregonsmithing and pendelton custom stocks. Had a friend had a weatherby style stock built for a mauser and a sako , both look and shoot great.

You haven't said if you have a particular use in mind, but may I suggest a 25-06 stock or improved. With modern bullets and a twist suited to them It will be easier on your shoulder and wallet than some of the others mentioned here and more than adequate for mulies and antelope.

If anyone is looking for commercial mauser actions I have 2 ....a Santa Barbara and a Mark X....hanging in the gun room.Also have a real nice Birdseye maple stock.
