Can anyone tell me if the VX5HD with a 44mm objective will fit on a Remington 700 with Leupold medium bases?
Yep lows will work too with a half inch under the objective. This one is mounted on a Rem 700 action and Sendero CFW barrel with Warne low rings. There is 3/4" under the scopes objective.

So do they make a low and would it work? Or stick with medium?

Leupold #175119. Check out that model number.
Thank you. I've never used that type of base and ring so I wasn't sure about those. I've always used the dovetail type or the DNZ one piece base and ring combo. Looks like most everyone uses the rail type now though.

I've never used those leupold rings. I prefer the Leupold Mark 4 rings. I'm sure there a good ring.

FWIW, I bought a Zeiss V4 in 4-16x44 and returned it when I discovered that BOTH the windage was not marked for degree of adjustment nor was the parallax for adjustment. Might not be a deal breaker for you but was for me. Felt for that price it both should have been.

I wish I could offer a experienced based opinion of the VX5 line of scopes but all 7 of my Leupolds are
VariX-II's, VariX-III or VX-III's all are set it and forget it scopes.

My biggest issue with asking for opinions of Leupold scopes is the number of Leopold haters on the web theses days, I mean the number shocked me as much if not more than anything else hunting optic related I have ever seen.

I have three VariX-II's and one VariX-III that all have seen only magnum rifle recoil, or 12ga sabot slug recoil, 12ga 3.5" magnum turkey loads, magnum ML recoil and countless hundreds and hundreds and two 1k+ of rounds of same. Two of my three VariX-II's have seen drops of 3-5 feet onto concrete at the gun range, one fell 20"+ from a treestand and even after 20 years and 100s of hard recoiling rounds later all suffered zero ill affects.

FWVLIW I did do a butt load of research on the VX5 as I simply could not afford the VX6 and the only and I do mean ONLY negative I EVER saw people report was issues with tracking and return to zero with the VX5, not vary many mind you but a few, other than tracking RTZ issues all other reports stated the VX5 had superb glass completely out of proportion to its price and superb low light performance. Had I been able to afford even the VX5 it I would have bought it with the HTMR reticle, and I would only buy it with the HTMR reticle. Unfortunately for me >$800 was my max and best price I ever found a VX5 W/HTMR NIB was $1k but NEVER once in stock and EVERY time I found a used one for sale with the HTMR reticle it was sold.

This strictly MY OPINION only, but Ill take a scope that tracks and returns to zero with absolutely reliable certainty but has only average glass all day over a scope with better glass and less reliable record of tracking and RTZ.
I purchased a VX5HD 3-15x44 with the firedot reticle and received it today. Haven't messed with it much yet but from the few times I looked through it the glass seems to be clear edge to edge. As far as tracking for me, I won't be dialing a whole lot so hopefully it won't be an issue for me. All of my scopes up to this point have been like yours, set it and forget it.
