Temp stability is what causes me to stay away from this line of powders. Double based powders often lead to higher velocities, but comes at the expense of stability. That's why they don't get talked about much.
Wolf, you might want to take another look at these powders. There's not many more stable than Magnum. I also use their Hunter and Big Game with no signs whatsoever of temp instability. "Just sayin'".....as the youngsters say.
Try to find Retumbo. You won't. There is a reason why it is non-existent. I've been using MagPro and some older stock of Vit550 & 560 until Retumbo returns. As for clean burning, that is a good thing but if you are just sighting in onezytwozy's or a few shooter getting ready for hunting, and not running 100s out the tube, does it matter that much?
My hunting rig gets one or two out the tube with my same proven handloads just prior to the hunt to recheck zero then back in the safe or hard case until the event. It isn't used for comp or targeetpractice having spent oodles of cash for a precision tool.
Just saying, clean and consistant burn rate often go hand in hand which is a good thing when I am shooting 25 to 150 rounds in a session.
Sorry to hear of your struggles to find retumbo. My local gun store has it at the moment. It is on my "I might try that if my current powders disappoint" list.
What cartridge??I use Hunter for 150 and 165 grain bullets from a Browning X bolt with a 26 inch barrel.
Easily get 3,470 for 150 and 3,407 for 165. Used 75 grain for 150 and 77 for 165. Adding more powder gained 2 feet. No pressure issues at all. I have cans of it. Their manual is free. Looks and acts very similar to Superformance.
Hey, Calvin45, how are things "north of the border"? I, like you, am looking at some powders not frequently mentioned. As soon as my Hammers arrive(probably tomorrow!), I will be testing them first with MagPro in 6.5Prc, 7mm Rem. Mag., and maybe even in 300 Win. Mag. I do have H1000 and most of the slower RL series of bang juice but no RL26 and while I like the 26 alot, I am tired of waiting! I have used the Nosler book data because they post the approximate case fill % for each cartridge case, caliber, and bullet weight in their lineup. I also have data from Bob at Berger for my 6.5 and by cross-referencing the 2, I see that MagPro will achieve a very nearly full case when all is said and done. Of course, as always, work up to pressure carefully (I'm not that good looking but it's the only face I have!)! I can work up to pressure and check FPS here at home but it will be Monday before I'll be able check accuracy, ES, and SD. Will post what I can then. MTGEEZERWas just perusing some load data online and found the numbers for these powders in .300 win mag quite compelling. No one seems to talk about them though. Anyone using these? What can you tell me, pros, cons, any reason they aren't popular?
