Resume Ladder:
  • 57.0 3193 - Blown Primer?! Guess I found max already!

56.2: 5 Shots.

Pulled one shot, 4 remaining shots = ~0.3" group.
  1. 3155
  2. 3164
  3. 3150
  4. 3158 Faint Ejector
  5. 3160 Slightly heavier bolt lift (no ejector though)
For what its worth on 5 shots: SD = 5.3 ES = 14.

Looks like 56.2 is a touch hot still, but seems to have decent velocity uniformity and definitely has fantastic accuracy.

For today I'm considering the following options (I have ~2 lbs of each of these powders):
  • Hybrid 100V: 55-55.5 for ~3130
  • Staball 6.5: ~55.5 for ~3100
  • H4350: 55.5 for ~3125 (lower edge of the node tested today)
Staball & H4350 are likely the first test due to their temperature stability. We'll see though, maybe I'll get the wild hair to find the top end of RL26 instead!

I think the new 7RM likes the 172 AH's

116 gr Absolute Hammer
Fed 210 primer
.002 neck tension.
3.30 coal

3 rifles - zero pressure signs. Temp was 75. Did not chrono but speed for Kimber is in the chart... right at 3500fps in 24 in - 10 twist barrel.

Full factory model 70 featherweight
1 inch factory
0.5 inch reloads

270 winchester model 70 with custom barrel.
1.5 factory

My .300wby with the 178s is kinda all over the place.

would you try switching primers first and see, or just abandon the IMR 4451 and try...????

I found pressure quicker with the IMR-4955, but would still be able to get 3200-3250, maybe even 3,300 safely. I was finally able to snag some federal LRM primers, they'll be delivered today, so I can try something other than the CCI to see if that helps.

I have plenty of 4955 and H4831sc to play with, should be able to get decent enough velocities out of those i think. On the slower side i have H1000 and RL26; faster I only have imr4451 and some H4350; but not a ton of 4350.

The rifle will put 2 pretty close together, but i'm getting pretty good horizontal stringing with the 3rd or 4th in a group. Not necessarily in order, sometimes 1/3 will be touching or **** near, but the 2nd shot will be 2" left. The gun has been fired 3 pretty close together; and also fired one at a time between barrel cooling. It's a pretty thin barrel for the amount of oomph in those rifles and gets hot quick.

It could of course be me, i'm no expert marksman; but during these range sessions i'm firing the new 7mm, the 6.5 creed, and my .22-250 into great (for me) groups; well under moa. no lead sleds, but i do have good bags.

thoughts?
thank you

i was playing from 3200-3280. i can push them a bit more with 4451 and get over 3300 but i start to get ejector marks pretty heavy at 3340+ so i backed off a bit for a little better primer pocket life.

I have good luck with H4350 powders in a lot of rifles. Thanks for the info.

I had a buddy just go through this. What does this rifle do with factory ammo?

Try a different a different powder... if you don't see immediate improvement I wouldn't waste any time with that bullet.

Hammers are extremely easy to load for and have worked immediately.... except in a 300 RUM browning i have. It shoots bergers lights out, but the 181 [i believe is a twist problem = wrong bullet for twist.] And the 124 i can't get to shoot in it either.

Also call Steve and he'll help you decide if that is the right bullet or not and will make it right.

Did you deep clean before Hammer load development?

I think the new 7RM likes the 172 AH's
Very nice. Now run that same load out to 300 yards and see what you get. I had a very nice group at 100 and 200 yards, but it opened up significantly at 300 in my 7 STW. I shot the 177 Hunter that same day to make sure I wasn't the weak link, and it shot great groups. So, I'm sticking with the 177 Hunter. I had the same issue with the 140 Absolute compared to the 143 Hunter in my 280AI.
