I just picked up a custom 7mm weatherby from the 70's. Has a 24" barrel, action is a Remington 700 left handed.

I picked up some hammer bullets to do some testing with 140gr and 146 gr. I'm in CA so copper is a must.

just seeing if anyone has any suggestions to start with working a load make up with

For the 146 hammer hunter I'd use nosler load data for the 140-150 as a guide. H4831sc or there about for burn rate.
With the 143 hammer hunter in my 7mm wby I settled on 75.0 g h4831sc. 3415fps
There was no discernable pressure there but that's plenty fast enough for deer and black bears and they shot really good.

No idea on the 140 assuming that's an "absolute" hammer probably much faster like h4350.

Never had the chance to try the Hammer ones, but used the 145 Barnes LRX with a max load of Norma MRP in a Weatherby case. I got 3327 ft/sec ( 26" barrel) with .75 MOA. Great load MRP has always worked great in my 7mm Weatherby

Since it is a " Custom", first thing I would do is determine if it has the "Weatherby Freebore" . According to Weatherby info, it usually measures .378" on the 7mm Wby Mag.
