7mm STW C.O.A.L?

I have a line on a rifle chambered in 7mm STW.

The max. functional length for the magazine is 3.65.

How is that gonna work if I want to shoot 180 Bergers or similar.

Am I going to lose too much case capacity?

Is it a factory rifle? Do you know rate of twist? Some will not stabilize the 180.

It is a Savage 110.

It was re-chambered from 7mm Rem Mag to STW. I think it had mag-well lengthened to allow the extra length of STW?

I have pretty much made up my mind NOT to buy it.

Loading ULD's just might turn your 3.6" magazine rifle into a single shot.
It all depends how deep the barrel is throated. Then you back off somewhere between 0.003" and 0.060" to know your final COL.

I guess the question to ask would be "what's your COL, shooting this bullet from that rifle."

My 7mm SAUM, SA Browning has a COL spec of 2.740" but I load it out to 2.890" to touch the lands. And yes, I needed to do quite o bit of magazine grinding. And set the bolt stop back 0.250.

I still want to build an 7mm STW on a Savage action but I don't want something that has allready been worked on.(and possibly bubba'd).

Fred's rifles do shoot. The neat thing about Savage's, is the ability to many different cartridge barrels to switch to. I have one in a 220 Swift Douglas barrel and a Pac-Nor in a .243AI. Just about every manufacturer of rifle barrels has jumped on the band wagon and sell pre-fit Savage barrels. You can buy different bolt heads to accommodating various cartridges too. He has gone to the wood laminate stocks, I prefer the composite Bell and Carlson he use to have though.

I have seen that site before and have had my eye on the grey/black varmint laminated stock with adjustable cheek piece.

His prices are pretty fair to.

I am gonna hold out for a used 300 RUM and then re-barrel it to 7mm STW, and get a SharpShooter's stock.

IF I don't find one by Spring I am gonna pick up a Savage 111 Longrange Hunter in 7mm Remington Mag.

IF the accuracy is .5 MOA or better I will keep as is. They come with accustock, accutrigger, and muzzle break. So I am hoping with a fine-tuned handload it will do .5 MOA or better. IF it doesn't I will get a custom barrel and go from there.

My Kirby Allen 7STW is built on a Rem 700 and has a Wyatt's extended magazine box (3.820").

It shoots very well with 180 Berger VLDs set at 3.800" and 77.0 grs Retumbo.

Isn't 77 gr a pretty light load for STW? What kind of velocity and barrel length?

77gr is right at the top for the 7 STW/180gr bullet in the reloading manuals. Kirby found this load shot into less than MOA @ 800 yrds.

I might go up some without pressure signs, but the Rem action is not as robust as custom actions that use heavier charges, so I'll probably just stick with the 77 grs.

Although I've had the rifle for several months, I haven't been able to work with it, or chrono any loads yet. It has a 27" Lilja barrel (with APS brake), and I hope to get out and work with it in Jan., and will file a report.

Don't be afraid to let VLD bullets jump. Weatherby rifles have a very liberal freebore and most all shoot great. I have a rem 700 bdl detachable mag STW and the longest I can seat them is 3.60" OAL but I actually shoot them at 3.53" OAL. Honest .50" groups out of a factory rifle. Bergers website has a bullet seating suggestion page that I followed and it works great. The only difference I did was to start with my maximum OAL first ( 3.60" mag measurement ). This was after measuring OAL to the lands so I could monitor jump. No problems.
