Load data was generated using Quick Load a 26 inch barrel a COAL (cartridge over all length) of 3.600 inches and your COAL and velocity could be a little different.
AS WITH ALL RELOADING APPROACH THE MAXIMUM LOADS WITH CAUTION AS ALL RIFLES AND RELOADING TECHNIQUES WILL BE DIFFERENT. If YOU CHANGE ANY OF YOUR COMPONENTS; THIS INCLUDES DIFFERENT POWDER LOT NUMBERS; YOU MUST REFIGURE YOUR LOADS BY STARTING WITH THE MINIMUM LOAD.

I have a new 7mm RUM that is just itching to be fired. I'll be working up loads with the same bullet, 168 gr. VLD. The only thing holding me up is the arrival of my H-S Preision stock. It was supposed to be shiped on 6/22 but I haven't seen a charge on my credit card yet. I'll let you know the results in a few weeks, hopefully. I'm flying down to Idaho for my anual whitetail/turkey hunt in November so I hope to have the bugs worked out by then.

I'm curious how deep you're seating thoes 168 Bergers? Everything that I've read sugests that Bergers like to be seated to or into the lands.
I thought the Berger 210's might be too long for my 300 WSM. But it turned out that when I seated them to barely touch the lands the bearing surface of the bullet only caught about 2/3rds of the neck.
So I'm wondering if you're seating the 168's to the lands, how much neck are you catching? If not seating them to the lands, then disregard.

What rifle do you have? Usually, if you load to fit the mag, they wont come very close to the lands, depnding on what rifle you have, especially with narrow ogive bullets, like the Bergers. They might work fine loaded to fit the mag, but if you ask the guys in here and the Berger guys, I believe thay will tell you that Bergers usually work best seated to the lands.
In my rifles, Ruger M77 7mmRM, S&W M1500 7mmRM, Sako 85 Finnlight 300 WSM and Rem Sendero 300 RUM, you can not seat them to the lands and fit them in the mag, You can however, hold one down in the mag because the the nose on the top one is above the mag box.

A friend of mine has been loading the 168's in his Remington 700's. One is a SAUM the other is a RUM. We've been using H-1000 in both of them.
He wanted them both to fit in the magazine. The SAUM makes a 0.075" jump to the lands and the RUM has to make a 0.120" jump. Both shoot sub MOA like that so maybe he is just lucky.
The SAUM is the titanium mountain rifle and the RUM is a Sendero.
Not sure how much this helps but it appears that Bergers don't HAVE to be into the lands.

I also wanted to be able to load these in the magazine as I will be using them for hunting and after contacting berger they sent me all of the potential loads for the .280 and 7mag. I chose to use rl 19 as it is what I had on hand. Basically I loaded two 21 round sets. One with varying c.o.a.l(starting with the max to fit in the magazine and working down in .04" increments with the powder just above min), and one with varying powder loads Starting at the min and working up to max. I shot all of the rounds and combined the most accurate powder load with the most accurate coal. I have my 280 shooting .75 groups at 100 yards. I am not a professional shooter so I think this is solid. I am sure you got your answer by now but this is more for others who come accross this thread. This method will likely work for all calibers.

I've been shooting a 7mmRUM since before they were a factory offering, basically wildcatting the 300RUM. Primarily a 1,000 yard prone target gun (just shot out the second chamber), but I built one on an M700 CDL action to take to Africa in '08.
Both LOVE 5010 pulldown powder, each also likes Retumbo. I have some Vihtavouri powders on hand thanks to LEN, but have yet to wring them out. My target rifle shoots the Sierra 175s well, but shines with Cauterucio 176s and 156s. The hunting rig shoots 175 TSXs pretty well, but only at max velocity - 3,301fps. You need a 1:9" twist barrel or FASTER to stabilize this. When I backed off max, they yawed and tumbled at 200 yards. 160 gr Accubonds shoot very tight, but impact velocities at the muzzle may prevent their use in some conditions. I'll be trying Swift bullets soon - both 150 Scirrocos (love em in other rifles), but especially 175 A-Frames. I tried to talk Swift into making a heavier Scirocco in .284", but no dice......

The 168 VLD is that the Hunting or the Target version? Even though they are the same weight they do shoot differently. Try 86.0-89.0 grns. of Retumbo. I use the 89.0 load in my 7 Rum and it shoots in the .3" for a 3 shot group and I also use the 168 Hunting VLD in my 280 AI with 63.0 grns. of Retumbo with the same and smaller group size and have taken game with this bullet with excellent results.
