7mm Rem Mag 175gr ABLR at 2,815 fps.....should I be happy with this?

With a velocity of 2,815fps that is. I'm using a 26" 1:8 Criterion barrel, and I am loading with 63.5 gr of RL23 behind my 175 gr ABLR bullet. Federal 215 Match Primers. It is pretty mild recoiling, plus usually touches rounds at 100yds unless my hold is off. Extreme velocity spread is only 4fps!

Of course I am happy to get an accurate load but I have to say that I does bother me when I see guys here getting over 3,000fps with 180gr bullets. I do realize that and extra 175fps isn't going to make a difference on any game animal but it bothers me non the less. I have 200 loaded up with good Norma Brass.

What are your thoughts on this....am I overthinking velocity?

I've had better luck with slower powders in 7RM and 175s. I use N570.

I'm guessing 68.5 not 28.5? But that seems too hot for 175?. Maybe 63.5? Help OP!

H-1000 is my go too for 180 class bullets in 7 rem mag, but have had good luck with retumbo as well.
Over 3000 with a 26" barrel is going to be warm load for sure, but should able to get close to 3000 anyway

If it is an accurate load, and a safe load rock on.I will take accuracy over velocity everytime with in reason. Worry less shoot more, animals won't know the difference. H1000 and retumbo also work well in 7mm, also some barrels are faster/slower than others.

Not to be that guy but if I can get a 168 gr to 3060 FPS out of a 280ai the rem mag should be able to do the same with the 175. Seems like you just found a lower node, keep going. Always load your rounds to full potential.

IMO it depends on your criteria for this load. At my elevation of 2200 ft it looks like a good load out to 700 yards for hunting. If that meets or exceeds you range limitations then I'd try it out to those distances at varying ranges to confirm it's accuracy and trajectory. You could try slower powders to get more velocity, but one benefit of being at the lower node is possible better barrel/ brass life.

Could you get more, with h1000,RL26, vv560, or retumbo, yes. But do you need more? My 7wsm (26”barrel) load pushed a 180 berger 2945 with retumbo. Using vv560, I could get 3050. The vv560 load was more temp sensitive and was very hard on the barrel. It went from 1” at 300 to barely an inch at 100 in 1500-1700 rounds.

Sorry for the delay fellas!! Just woke up LOL.

    Yes its 63.5gr of RL23

I realize that I have a very accurate load and with a 4fps extreme spread with is incredible. I know that I can try a slower power and probably get some more velocity BUT the point of me posting essentially is, "Is 2,815 a pathetically slow load with a 175gr bullet out of a 7mm Rem Mag?"

Even though it's accurate, would you guys be satisfied with 2,815fps?

    Picking your brains here;)

If it were my rifle and the load matched my field finding then yes I'd be fine with that load. AccuBonds aren't my favorite bullet, but if YOU like them then great. Here's my criteria for MY current needs.
Is the barrel life acceptable (2k-2.5k or more).
Will it shoot to a mile on steel.
Will it take elk out to 700 yards or more ( even though I'll probably never shoot one that far).
Will it shoot chucks out to 1k with humane kills.

IMO your load on paper does that. The ES is great so it SHOULD prove to be a good LR round. Plus with the lower velocities, charge weight, and hopefully lower pressures you could stretch the barrel life. If it's a new barrel your velocities could rise after a couple of hundred rounds. But like I said earlier, does it suit your needs.

I would not be satisfied, I always try and load the cartridge to full potential, especially a magnum.

Thanks for the response! You are telling me what I want to hear, since I hate to start all over, I have a good supply of components, and I also have a few hundred rounds loaded up already;)

Is my 2,815 an egregiously LOW velocity for a 175gr 7mm Rem Mag?
From what I have read so far I know that it’s on the low end of the spectrum but is it THAT slow?
