I got lots of parts here to build a hunting rifle. I'm trying to get to 2920-3000 fps easily with 180 bergers. My 280AI falls little short with the 180s and a 25'' barrel 2880-2900 fps. Don't want to go to a belted mag. What else is out there that will do what I'm expecting with the most efficiency. 7saum 7-300shortmag 7lrm ????? will these work or what else am I missing??

my 7rum is at 3080 fps with the 180 sierra pushed by retumbo with rather mild loads. Big toys push hard without having to push it. I'd look at the 7stw or 7x300 but you aren't in the market for a belted. Perhaps the 28 nosler will be something you are interested in...

What do you get at 2920 - 3000 that you can't get at 2900?
Very often when you get speed you lose accuracy. Perhaps it's' not readily apparent with 100 yard load testing but stretching it out to 300 yards often tells a different story. To create an accurate load you need to balance speed with accuracy.
In a hunting rifle you have to reach the target and take it down. At 2900 fps mv your 180grn Berger is well above super sonic out past 1000 yards. Pushing to speed to 3000 fps does improve your wind drift, but only by about .3 MOA in a full value 10mph wind.

280AI at 2900+25" barrel = MAX pressure =brass eater!!!!
28 nosler would be good I think. If I could get brass

Also there is an accuracy at 2900-2920, 2980-3000, 3040-3060 and one at 3150 i have found this out by shooting 20,000 rounds in f-class comp. I JUST WANT TO BE AT THE 2980-3000 FPS NODE. with the most efficiency and great accuracy..... Packing around 22 pound f-class guns are no fun!!

Of course I would vote 28-Nosler. It will do what you want. Even with a 24" barrel.

Brass for the 26-Nosler is available now. Neck up is simple. 28-Nosler might be available before your reamer ships. Dies are available.

I don't thing the 7WSM or 7/300WSM will do it without stressing brass.
The 7STW will probably squeak it in there. I believe STW guys run hot.
The 7RM might get it with a 26" but hot hot hot.
The 7Weatherby. Same
The 7/300 Weatherby and the 7/300WM can do it at pressure limits.

Really, the 28-Nosler and 7STW fit best.

See my 284/26-Nosler thread there is data in there for the JLK 180 VLD in a 24" barrel.

Have you considered a longer barrel?

7 Long Range Hunter by Swamplord/Prometheus would do it. Uses 300 Nomra Mag brass. Would easily get you that upper node, and then some probably.

Easily done with the 7LRM. I am getting 3083 with the 180 gr. Hybrid and the rifle holds under 0.5 MOA at any distance. Brass and dies are readily available from Gunwerks so all you need to find is bullets and powder.

7 rem mag does it easily as well
This is my opinion, too. Same goes for the 7mm STW...Which can very easily reach those velocities with no pressure signs.

Unfortuntely, the OP doesn't want anything belted, for some reason?

My vote would be 7mm RemMag, as well. Brass is plentiful and cheap, and it's just hard to beat the good old 7mm RemMag that's been getting it done for 53 years. It has been my primary hunting caliber for 13 years now. And I don't see it changing anytime soon.

ok i'll break down and the belted mag is now in the picture.

Does anyone have any good or bad to say about the 7-300 win mag
