Hi all.
Guys, i would like to rebarrel my Howa 243W. I can buy a new barrel in 7mm cal. (.284") with 9" twist. Will this work together with Lapua Scenar 180gr.? Berger Bullets on their web write the 9" twist in 7mm will be OK with VLD 180gr.
Maybe it will work with Scenar 180gr then? gun)

Thx for your answers.

P.S. - (I can ask Lapua directly, but here in Europe they took enormous time to answer the emails)

P.S. 2 - Hornady write on their web the 7mm A-Max 162gr. need 8" twist....?! Any experience if this A-Max can work in 9" twist? Or i have completely bad idea...and it can´t be OK with A-Max

If you know your going to shoot the heaviest of .284's through it, I'd go even faster twist. I'd look for 1:8.5 or maybe even 1:8. If you are going to a short action caliber like 7mm-08 you may not be happy with velocity pushing those big pills though.

I had a Weatherby Vanguard 243 Win. , (Howa 1500 action made in Japan) that was re-barreled by Hart Rifle Barrels that shot 1 1/2" groups @ 300 yards with the 160 NAB @ 2725 and the 168 SMK in the 2600-2500 range. The 168's were really slow using N140, had used H414 that produced a little faster speed but the last lot of powder wouldn't group as well.

That said I think anything over the 168's would be way too slow moving to be any benefit to using them in the first place. ie: faster speed to make up for the lower BC vs. higher BC going slower.

You could do a 7mm-08 Ackley Improved and gain maybe 5% increase in velocity, but you might be better served to just chamber to a 260 Remington instead?

Well, i am little bit limited by barrel choice. I have very good offer for 7mm barrel with 9" twist. QuickLoad shows if i can push 180gr VLD with muzzle velocity around 780m/s (2560+ fps), it will fly in range 1000m (~1093yds) still more then 400m/s (1310+ fps). So i am relatively safely in transsonic zone. For punching holes in paper sure enough. But this should be more hunting than target rifle. My main 1000m rifle is 300WM with 208 A-Max. My original 7mm-08 idea was paper punching up to 700-1000m with 180gr (Berger VLD, Lapua Scenar) and hunting deer-sized game (usually between 100-180 lbs.) up to 500-600m (550-650yds) with 140-150-162gr hunting bullets like SST, AB LR, BT.... Thx very much for your opinion.

I dont want 260 Rem., because i already have other rifle in 6,5x47 Lapua. And i dont need two 6,5mm rifles. Here are my rifles and their tasks:

1.) 300WM - main LR rifle. Competition 1000+, occasionally LR hunting bigger game at 700+ distances

2.) 6,5x47 Lapua - Competition rifle only, all common distances here

3.) 9,3x62mm - main hunting rifle, big game, driven hunt....

4.) 7mm-08 - hunting rifle for 500-600m, small-medium sized deers/boars, occasionally LR training and competitons up to 800-1000....

What do you think about it?

I'm in a very similar spot. I have a 7mm MAG for longer ranges and am ordering a 7mm-08 like today for my medium range work on deer size game.

I personally am going with a 1:8.6 twist barrel and am planning on using Barnes 145 grain LRX. So I guess that's what I think about it.

I will play with 160 Accubonds and 168 Berger VLD's but I think the 130-150 grain bullets will be the sweet spot for only having 40-50 grains of powder to work with.

The 1:9 barrel your looking at should suffice just fine with composition bullets, Monos of the same (heavy) weights might not stabilize.
