7mm-08 or 30.06 for Moose?

I feel comfortable that I can shoot one in the brain. Plus, it will save meat. I am hunting cow only late season after the rut and calfing periods. Here is what is written in the state hunting guide for moose:

I'm sorry I thought you were intending to be a smart *** with the brain shot comment.. With when your hunt is I'd say you will have no problem getting in close enough for a head or neck shot. In this case I'd assume that either of the rounds would do just fine. My personal favorite is the base of the head, neck shot. Seems to work very well. I like head shot also but only if there looking at me or away from me. I've seen way to many animals run off with their jaws blown off due to not holding just right. Anyways... I'd say you'll be fine with either of the rifles. But I'm with you on the pistol part. blackhawk I'd assume it to be a 44mag? That'd be fun!

Hahaha looking at this list of cartridges it appears it hasn't been updated in a long while!!

I've had good luck with neck shots on deer to save on meat damage.

Might just take the .44 Mag Ruger Super Black Hawk along. I had my gunsmith make the front site with an orange insert the way the earlier police revolver model 19 was made. Just always liked that feature.

Hunting a Moose with a 30-06 would go with 200gr or heavier bullet.
A good premium bullet would hate to hear you lost it, would be ready for
a second shot if needed.....

i would have to use my M1 Garand. but for you; the 30-06 of your choice. with the bullets Michael reccomended.

my first choice would be a .338-06 without a second thought! But being as you've picked either the 7-08 or the 30-06, I'd go with the 30-06 first. Two reasons why. One is that the 30-06 has a little more power to work with (not a tremondous amount but still a couple hundred ft. lb. with 180 grain bullets). Secondly, and the most important; the 30 caliber bullets are built heavier than the 7mm's are. Yet the .338 caliber bullet is built even tougher.

Another poster spoke of a bull moose during the rut! Even big bears avoid them! They've been known to charge trucks and even a locomotive or two. They just have no sense of humor, let alone fear! If you make him mad (not hard to do) he can turn your body into a wet spot in the ground. I'd at least use a 180 grain 30 caliber bullet that has an extra thick bullet construction (like the Speer Grand Slam). But if it were me, I'd go with a .338-06 and 250 grain bone crushers.

You guys will find this funny...

I talked to the guide yesterday and he said anything from a .30-.30 on up is fine, "use em all the time on moose".

Think I will take the 30.06 based on the suggestions and use Sierra 180 grain pro hunters.
