7mag powder preference

One of the many amazing traits of the 7MM Rem Mag is the variety of powder that'll perform superbly with it. Unique would probably work in the 7MM Rem Mag.

I'm sure this has been brought up many times before but I always seem to get conflicting info. So here's my story. Bought a Savage lrh 7mag a couple years back to go on a mule deer/antelope hunt. We decided to go to Sturgis instead, because I love boobies and beer. Anyways, didn't like the muzzle brake or fact that the barrel was actually only 24.5" instead of the advertised 26". Changed out the barrel to a Lilja 26", changed trigger, recoil lug, bolt knob and bedded the action and swapped out the scope from a Bushnell 4200 6-24 (because I always wanted to try one) to a Sightron SIII 6-24. So my question is, I bought a bunch of 162gr Amax's. What powder would you guys run? I used to run H1000 in my Sendero and still have a few pounds left. But I hear it's not up there in velocity as some others. Any pet loads anyone would like to share?
65 grain H-4831 162 gr Hornady Amax rem 9.5 primer

My 7 rem mag preferred RL22 and N560. You will like either of those two powders. N560 with the 175 berger elite hunter and RL22 with bullets like the barnes 145 lrx.

I have had excellent results with retumbo. I ran 162gr bullets @ 3050 with 71.1 gr retumbo in my 26" That is a max load and may be way over max in your rifle cause some people get that velocity with 70 grains. So start about 5% lower and work up. You should be able to find a node somewhere between 3040-3060 fps. I figure that you will find a good seating depth anywhere from .047-.080 from the lands.

^^^He's nailed it^^^

Hard to beat H-4831

I get 3100+ FPS in W-W brass, 67 grains of H-4831, Fed 215 primers, and a 160 grains Nosler Partition out of a 24" barreled Sako AV, which is my proven elk load. It's accurate and huge elk don't like it, which means I like it. I know I could get 3200 FPS (I've done it with R-22), but I won't fix what ain't broken. It's actual performance makes me think that a 150 Partition or Accubond will work just as well. And I think that a 150 Partition from a .270 Win will kill huge elk just as dead. But I've not yet killed an elk with a .270 Win. But I will.

I like a lot of powders. I love H-4831SC & H-4831.

I had a longer (30") barrel and got 3254 ft/sec with 67.5 grains of H 4831 and a 168 gr match king with the powder (4831) that Hodgdon had recovered from surplus 20 mm cartridges."Warning" this would be a very hot load for rifles that were not chambered correctly for high pressures and velocities.

Even with today's powders I would not expect these velocities without excessive pressures.

Shot H4831 for years out of my 7RM. Been trying H1000 a bit, But accuracy with H4831 has always been top notch. It even shoots great in my 300WM, but leaves some speed on the table.

160gr NoslerAB, nosler case, fed215m primer and H1000 powder......2 shots to warm barrel and then 5 for group all shots @200yd

I think I would look to h1000, h4831 either one, rl23, rl26, imr7977, and retumbo.
