Deer to 400, maybe a black bear zero doubt slam dunk even with the dream of elk some day I'd go with the 84M in 7/08.....I have one in a 308 and it's so eager to please it's just amazing
Thanks for the reply, curious what bullet you like in the 308.

Comparison delimma.....if you are that confused in the two....
Isn't a 284 right in the middle....as a 280ai between a 284 and a 7rm.....
Pick one and do it....
But....
There has been a kimber on here for sale.....recently

The 257r is in the back of my mind to, tho I'm not really a big 25 cal fan.

.257 Roberts is a nice cartridge. Not the speed demon that the 25-06 Rem or .257 Wby are, but capable on medium game at reasonable distances. A bit more capable than the .243 Win. I think the recoil is less than the .243 Win when comparing the two pre-64 Mod 70 rifles I have. A very pleasant round to work with.

Downside to the .257 class is you won't have the selection of bullets that you will with the .284.

still thinks there's plenty of 257 bullets, at least for the normal hunter. I've had a few 257r and a few 250-3000, I liked them but never as much as my 7mms.

The 257 Roberts is a great and proven cartridge, just like the 25-06, but I prefer the 7mm cartridges. They have more punch.

if I was going to be doing more varmint/ predator hunting a 243 or 257 maybe better, but I just want a nice ss deer rifle the light weight is a bonus.

I do think I'll pick another m18 mauser in 243 my 6.5 prc is great. Just shot some quick groups this week to test, even with cheap 140 speer hotcors and h1000 a few went into the .01 and .02

ShootAllDay,

To me the rifle selection is perfect for the intended use and as for caliber I would ask you this question: Do you hand-load? If No, go with the 7mm-08, If Yes, go with the 280 AI. I am guessing that this will not be a high volume round count rifle due to the intended purpose of hunting. Either way both rounds are more than capable to 400 yards but the 280 AI will give better energy on target for heavier game such as Elk. In 2017 dropped a cow Elk at 422 yards with a 280 AI and 1 shot; so it will do it (handloads)

Cheers
